Richard Washington was born 05 Sept 1660 in Westmoreland County,
Virginia. He was the son of
John Washington (b. 1631) and Mary Flood Blunt Ford
Washington. |
Richard's father,
John, was the first of our Washington lineage to arrive in the
"Colonies". John arrived in Surry County, Virginia, from Barbadoes, as a
merchant, and married Mary. The marriage between John and
Mary was his first, but her third. She had first married
Richard Blunt and had a son, Thomas. Upon Richard's death,
she married Charles Ford. Upon Charles' death, she married
John Washington. |
Unfortunately, John died about the same time his son, Richard,
was born - perhaps drowned at sea. |
Richard's mother, Mary Flood Blunt Ford Washington, married
Henry Briggs, and had several additional children. Henry
would have been the father that actually raised Richard. |
Richard Washington, son of John and Mary, married Elizabeth
Jordan. Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur Jordan and
Elizabeth Bavin, widow of Richard Bavin. |
The Marriage Contract of Arthur Jordan and Elizabeth Bavin was
dated 22 April 1654, in which he provides for her in a very
generous way. The Jordan family were early settlers of Virginia
and were important men in the Colony, holding many high offices. |
Richard was a prominent landowner as well as a vestryman of
Southward Parish in Surry County, Virginia. |
