Oliver Cromwell Loftin

Born: 15 Dec 1861, Catawba County, NC

Died: 02 Apr 1930, Lincoln County, NC

Oliver Cromwell Loftin was the sixth child born to James Franklin Loftin and Frances "Franky" Elizabeth FisherCrom*, as he was called by family and friends, was born 15 Dec 1861 in Catawba County, North Carolina.

* When I was a little boy, my Dad (Sam Loftin) told me about his Grandfather William Alexander Loftin (who Sam said family and friends called Alec), Washington Lafayette Loftin (who Sam said was called Fate), and Oliver Cromwell Loftin (who Sam said the family called Crom).

Crom's siblings were Harriett Jone Loftin, William Alexander Loftin, James Edmund Loftin, Mary Frances Loftin, Alonzo Loftin (not to be confused with Alonzo Lester Loftin or Alonzo Kelly Loftin) and Washington Lafayette Loftin.

Crom's father, James Franklin Loftin, was killed-in-action in 1864 during the Civil War.  Crom would have been 3 years old at the time.  According to the 1870 Catawba County Census, Crom (Oliver) was 9 years old and living with his mother and siblings in the Hamilton Township of Catawba Station.

According to Cecelia Burr, "My grandmother, daughter of Oliver and 'Belle', was Mary 'Mollie' Loftin Huffstetler.  She was married to Roscoe E. Huffstetler.  Grandmother Mollie died in 1939 in a hospital fire in Lincolnton (may have been Reeves Hospital).  She was seriously burned and died within a day or two.  She was supposed to come home the night of the fire, but it was November and icy.  It was decided she should stay overnight.
