|
Elizabeth
Salina
Loftin was the second child born to
Thomas Loftin and
Sally Lavinia
Beatty. Elizabeth was born about 1828 in Lincoln/Catawba County, NC, and
occasionally went by the name Betsy. |
|
|
According to the
1830 Lincoln County Census, there were 3 living in the Thomas
Loftin home, 1 male under 5 years of age (James Franklin), 1 female under 5 years
of age (Elizabeth
Salina) and a male between 30 - 40 years old (Thomas). There
is no indication where Isabella Caroline was living - more than likely with other relatives.
She would have beena bout 7 years old. |

The 1850 Census shows Albert and Salina (listed as
Elizabeth S. Cook on this Census) living in Catawba
County, North Carolina, with their 11 month old daughter,
Sarah Jane. Albert is 27 and working as a
farmer and Salina was 22. Surprisingly, the Census seems
to indicate that Salina had attended school during the
year. Salina's son James Monroe Cook
was born about 8 months after this Census was taken so she would
have been about 1 month pregnant. |

Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Albert and Salina
moved their family from Catawba County to Mecklenburg County.
The 1860 Census shows them living in the Western Division of
Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Albert is
36 and working as a "Laborer" and Salina/Selina is
28. |
|
The children living in the Cook family home were
Samuel (age 11), James Monroe (age 9),
Francis G. (age 7), Mary Ann (age 5) and
Etta Cornelia/Cornelitta (age 1). The Census
data was collected on 02 Jul 1860 and it's interesting to note
that none of the Cook children had attended school during
the year. |
|
This 1860 Census does not list Albert and Salina's
daughter Sarah Jane who would have been about 11
years old - BUT - it does mention a son named "Samuel"
who was 11 years old. Since Sarah didn't die until 1938
and since Albert and Salina didn't have a son
named Samuel, this seem more than likely to have been
their daughter Sarah Jane who the Census Collector
identified incorrectly. |

Records seem to indicate that Albert and Salina's
last son, Avery Cook, was born in 1862. As it
turns out, Salina also died about 1862 at the age of 34.
Could this premature death have been the result of a difficult
pregnancy? Salina's death left Albert with six
small children to care for yet there is no indication as to how
this was accomplished. |
|
|
|
Albert married Mary Ann Stiles
before 1867 and perhaps as early as 1862. Mary Ann
was born about 1834. Their marriage seems to have produced at
least two children |

Mary Ann Stiles Cook died about
1881. After her death, Albert married Margaret C. Allen
on 28 Aug 1881 in Catawba County, NC. Margaret was the
widow of James B. Little, having married him 11 Apr 1860
in Catawba Co, NC. |

|
The 1900 Census Shows Albert and his third wife
Margaret E. Allen Little living in the Newton Township,
Maiden Precinct, Catawba County, North Carolina. He is 75 and
still working as a farmer. The Census indicates that Margaret
was born Nov 1834 and was 65 years old. There is a 24 year old
boarder by the name of Samuel Sigmon who was
living with Albert and Margaret and working as a
farm laborer - more than likely on Albert's farm. At the
time the Census was taken, Albert had worked on the farm
for 6 months that year - while Samuel had only worked 4
months. The Census shows that Albert is renting his farm
and that he could read and write. |

By 1910, Albert (age 85) and Margaret (age 75)
were living with his youngest son, William May
Cook (age 39) and his wife Ida Estella
Murray (age 42). The 1910 Census shows them living in the
Newton Township of Catawba County, NC. William and Ida
had two children: Georgia Alma (age 11) and
Fannie Hazel (age 5). The Census indicated that
William and Ida have been married for 15 years and
that she had another child who had died. William is
working as a laborer at a cotton mill. He owned his home,
mortgage free, and that it was not a farm. |
|
The 1910 Census shows that this is Albert's third
marriage and Margaret's second marriage. |
