Isabella "Ebba"
Caroline Loftin |
|
|
 |
Born: Abt. 1823, Lincoln County (now
Catawba County), North Carolina Died:
25 Jun 1893, Catawba, Catawba County, North Carolina |
|
|
Isabella "Ebba"
Caroline
Loftin was the first child born to
Thomas Loftin and
Sally Lavinia
Beatty. Isabella was born about 1823 in Lincoln/Catawba County, NC,
and was named after her maternal grandmother
Isabella
McCorkle Beatty. Isabella Carolina
occasionally went by the name Ebba. With limited records,
the actual date of Isabella's birth and death are unknown and
Census records about her age are not consisten. The 1860 Census
says that she was born in 1823 - that's the one I've chosen to
use. The 1870 Census says that she was born in 1827 and the 1880
Census says that she was born in 1830. |
|
|
According to the
1830 Lincoln County Census, there were 3 living in the Thomas
Loftin home, 1 male under 5 years of age (James Franklin), 1 female under 5 years
of age (Elizabeth
Salina) and a male between 30 - 40 years old (Thomas). There
is no indication where Isabella Caroline was living - more than likely with other relatives.
She would have been about 7 years old. |

Will of Isabella McCorkle Beatty |
|
Isabella
Caroline Loftin was mentioned in the Will of her maternal grandmother,
Isabella
McCorkle Beatty dated 11 Dec 1836. It says: |
|
“2nd, I leave and
bequeath to my granddaughter Isabella Caroline
Loftin, a
feather bed and under bed and bedstead, one bolster and
too pillows, one sheet, one blanket, one coverlet worn some
(one new, one her choice) one calico quilt (her choice) and a
white knotted counterpen. And I leave and bequeath to my
grand daughter
Betsy
Salina Loftin, one sheet, a blanket,
too/two coverleds, one calico quilt, a white corded counterpen,
these beds and furniture is what I allow for my daughter
Sarah L. (Lavina/Viney) Loftin the mother of the
above named my two granddaughters. I leave also a large stand of white curtains to my too/two granddaughters above
named to devide." |
|
|
|
|
Isabella Caroline Loftin married James Jones
sometime after 1850. James was born about 1814 and was the son
of George Jones (1780 - 1829) and Anna
Litton (1783 - 1853). James had 15 children and most
genealogist attribute all 15 to his marriage to Isabella
Loftin. I, however, think that is an error. |
|
|
|
James Jones had first married Elizabeth
Robinson on 15 Jul 1833 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
The 1850 Census shows all six of James and Elizabeth
Jones' children living with David and Nancy
Summett Huitt in Catawba County, North Carolina. I
think this Census points out an all to familiar story of life in
the 1800s. My guess is that Elizabeth Robinson
Jones had died while giving birth to youngest daughter,
Emeline. With the death of his wife, James Jones
could not care for six small children and work at the same time.
When that happened, the children were either sent to live in an
orphanage, with relatives or even with family friends. I think
this is the case for the five youngest Jones children. |
|
The 1850 Catawba County, NC, Census shows James Jones'
children Manuel (age 10), Alfred (age 9),
Burton (age 5), James A (age 2) and Emeline
(age 11 months) living with David and Nancy Huitt on their farm
in Catawba County, NC. Eldest son Marcus Lafayette Jones
(age 14) was not living with his siblings on the Huitt farm. He
was more than likely trying to find work for himself. As of yet,
there has been no Census found for him or for his father,
James Jones, for 1850. |

By 1860, James' eldest son Marcus Lafayette Jones
(age 24) and his brother Manuel Waller Jones
(age 20) were living in Louisville Ward 3, Jefferson County,
Kentucky. The brothers were working as painters and living with
20 other boarders at Caroline Munchausen's
Boarding House. I imagine both boys thought their personal
estates were rather large considering the rough times they had
seen after the death of their mother. Louisville, Kentucky was a
thriving city at the time. Other boarders with Caroline
Munchausen on this Census had occupations such as barber,
tailor, baker, merchant, peddler, servant, engineer, stone
mason, wagon wheel maker, carriage maker, saddler, iron worker
and black smith. The town was predominately populated with
German immigrants. |

At the same time in North Carolina, the 1860
Census shows James Jones and his wife (of about 10 years)
Isabella Caroline Loftin Jones with seven of his
children. The three youngest children from his marriage to
Elizabeth Robinson were back at home. They were:
Burton (age 16), Alexander (age 12) and Emeline
(age 10). The children form James' marriage to
Isabella Caroline Loftin were: Lucinda
(age 9), Martha A. (age 6), Elizabeth (age 4) and
Isaac M. (age 2). James was working as a farmer
with a Real Estate value of $800 and a Personal Estate value of
$550. |

At the same time in Fairfield County, South Carolina, James
Jones' third son Alfred C. Jones was living and
working as a laborer for Hiram Steele, a wealthy
carriage maker. Alfred was 17 years old at the time. It
appears that Steele's eldest son, James, was the overseer
of his business. |

The three oldest Jones brothers had a very close bond
after the death of their mother. The 1860 Census shows that
Manuel and Marcus were living in Kentucky while their
brother Alfred was in South Carolina, but when the
Civil War broke out in 1861, the Jones brothers
returned home to North Carolina and on 20 Sep 1861 all three
brothers enlisted in the Confederate army, Company F, 32nd
Regiment North Carolina Infantry as Privates. Marcus was
25 at the time of his enlistment, Manuel was 21 and
Alfred was 18. Fortunately, all three brothers survived the
Civil War. |

The 4 Oldest Jones Boys |
|
As a result of their moving around to
find work after their mother's death, as well as their
support for each other during the
Civil War, the four oldest
boys kept on moving from place to place during their
lifetime. It's easy to see the times when their moves
overlapped with their other brothers. |

The 1870 Census shows James and Caroline Jones
living in the Hamilton Township of Catawba County, NC. Their
Post Office was Catawba Station which eventually became the town
of Catawba. The Census lists James' age as 56 and Caroline as
43. The only children from his first marriage still in the
Jones home was Emaline (age 20). The children from
James and Caroline's marriage were: Lucinda
(age 18), Martha Ann Louvinia (age 14), Roseanna
Elizabeth (age 13), Isaac Monroe (age 12), Sarah
Jane (age 11), Nancy Catharine (age 8), Olivia
Margaret (age 6) and Holenbeck (age 3). James
was working as a farmer with a Real Estate value of $450 and a
Personal Estate value of $50. Both Real Estate and Personal
Estate amounts have decreased from the 1860 Census. |
|
None of the children younger than Emaline were able to
read and write and there is no indication that any of them had
ever attended school on this or the 1860 Census. |

By 1880, James and Caroline had moved from Catawba
County to the Lillesville Township of Anson County, North
Carolina. His age is listed as 69 and her age as 50. James'
occupation was listed as "Tenant" as was one of his neighbors.
Daughter Nancy Catharine was listed as 8 on the
1870 Census and 21 on the 1880 Census. Her correct age should
have been 18 on this Census according to the birth date I have
for her (b. 1862). James and Caroline's daughter
Florence, age 17, was not listed on the 1870 Census and
she should have been. Where was she living at the time of the
1870 Census? She would have been about 7 years old then. There
is also the possibility that this is not "our" James & Caroline
Loftin Jones. If you have reason to believe this is not them,
let me hear from you. |
