Jacob Harvey's mother,
Delilah, died shortly after the 1850 Census on 14 Oct 1850.
His father, Jacob, married Nancy Malinda Frasure in 1851.
The 1860 shows that there were seven children still living on
the family farm. Jacob's name is listed as "Harvy" and
his age is listed as 23. The other siblings still on the
family farm were William, Noah, (John) Wilburn,
Patrick, (Henry) Theodore and Ann. |

In 1860 the
United States was less than 100 years old and the issue of
slavery had become an uncompromising issue. By 1861 South
Carolina had succeeded from the Union and there was a Civil War
between the northern and southern states. Fighting commenced on
April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a Federal
military installation at
Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
All seven sons
of Jake and Delilah Setzer served in the Civil War. |
|
Noah Monroe Setzer, age 23, seems to have been the first
of Jacob Setzer's son's to enlist in the Confederate army.
Noah joined Company A, 12th Regiment on 27 Apr 1861. |
|
John Wilburn Setzer, age 22, enlisted in Company K, 46th
Regiment on 27 Mar 1862. |
|
On July 4, 1862, Marcus Elkanah (age 32), William Able (age 26), Jacob
Harvey (age 25),
Patrick Sylvanus (age 19), and Henry Theodore (age 16) enlisted
as part of the Confederate army, leaving Jacob with a large farm
and no sons to help run it. |
|
|
Jacob Harvey
Setzer was in Company C, 57th Regiments - more than likely the
same time as several of his brothers. Like his brothers,
he was in five battles and
was captured and held prisoner for sixteen months at
Rappahannock Station. |
|
|
|
|
Jacob was hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, 10 Oct 1862 with
typhoid fever, then furloughed for thirty days on or about
October 18, 1862. He returned to duty in November-December, 1862
and was reported present through October 31, 1863. Jacob was
captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on 07 Nov 1863
and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland on 11 Nov 1863. He was
paroled at Point Lookout on 24 Feb 1865 and received at Aiken's
Landing, James River, Virginia between February 25th and March
2, 1865, for exchange. Jacob ended up in the hospital at
Richmond again on 02 Mar 1865 and was reported still in hospital
at Richmond on 18 Mar 1865. |
|
|
Jacob apparently died in hospital at Richmond. The cause of death was not reported. |
