*The 1850 Census also shows that Thomas and Margaret had two sons named William.

Three of Thomas and Margaret Fisher Loftin’s sons enlisted in the Civil War in 1861, as well has his son, James Franklin Loftin, from his marriage to Viney Beatty

Pinkney Loftin enlisted 6 Jun 1861 at the age of 19 and was part of the 23rd Regiment - Company F where he served as a Private.  Captain Hilton of the 23rd Regiment gave Pinkney's death as 15 Sep 1861 of disease near Manassas.

William Loftin was also part of the 23rd Regiment - Company A and served as a Private.  Records show that William was present April thru December 1862.  He was sent to the hospital Sept 12/Oct 12 1862 and died 3 Dec 1862 in Catawba County.

Eli was also a Private in the 23rd Regiment - Company F.  According to some sources his age was 16.  Other sources show his age to have been 19.  He was shot in the knee 1 July 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and his left leg was amputated to the thigh.  He lay on the battlefield several days and nights, not being moved until after the battles of Gettysburg were all over.  The leg, however, was removed by a surgeon on the field.   Eli spent the next year in various hospitals.  He was admitted to Camp Letterman USA Hospital in Gettysburg on 08 Aug 1863; transferred 03 Nov 1863 to General Hospital in Baltimore, MD; moved to the hospital at Point Lookout, MD on 12 Jan 1864; admitted to Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, VA on 04 May 1864.  He was finally exchanged and admitted to the Salisbury, NC hospital in December 1864.

Anderson apparently married shortly after the Civil War.  The 1870 Catawba County Census shows his age as 28 and that he is married to Margaret (Unknown), age 24.  Anderson and Margaret have a modest farm and two small daughters, Florida and Ettie/Etta.  The Census also indicates that Anderson and Margaret could not read or write.

The 1880 Catawba County Census shows the age difference between Eli Anderson and Margaret as 8 years, instead of 4 years as was shown on the 1870 Census.  Anderson was listed as "maimed" - a result of his from wounds sustained during his service during the Civil War.  Florida and Etta could read, but apparently had not learned to write.

Census Records for 1890 were destroyed by fire and no 1900 Census Record has been found.

Anderson & Margaret had two daughters:

By 1910, Eli Anderson and Margaret were living on the family farm by themselves.  The age of both is listed as 65.  If he was born in 1841 his real age would have been 69.  The Census shows that Margaret had only had two children and that both were living.  Anderson and Margaret still couldn't read or write.
