The 1870 Census is the first one after John J. Caldwell married Elizabeth Sanders Drum.  The Census shows them living in the Caldwell Township of Catawba County, NC.  John's age is listed as 32 and Elizabeth as 25.  Apparently the farm that John is working on does not belong to him because he has no Real Estate value listed on this Census.  He does however have $200 worth of Personal Estate value.

In 1870, John and Elizabeth have three sons.  Joseph Isaiah Caldwell is 9 years old.  George Washington Caldwell is 4 years old and Rufus Marion Caldwell is two years old.

The 1900 Census shows John and Elizabeth still living in the Caldwell Township of Catawba County, NC.  His birth year is incorrectly listed as 1836 and should be 1837 (according to his grave marker and his Death Certificate).  There were still three children living with the family: John Phillip (age 23), Rhoda Victoria (age 21) and David Hoyle (age 13).  The Census shows that Elizabeth had given birth to nine children but only seven were still living in 1900.  Daughters Mary C. Caldwell died on 09 Mar 1888 at the age of 14 and Martha Caldwell died on 12 Jun 1893 at the age of 10.  John and Elizabeth owned their home/farm mortgage free.

John and Elizabeth's son William "Bill" Pinkney Caldwell and his wife Mary Elizabeth Crouse were living nearby.

The following story of baptism might be of interest as written by Rev. L. R. Williams, Mars Hill, North Carolina:

My experience with Mr. John Caldwell, Sr., in his salvation, when he was an old man, almost 85 years old.

My brother, Ben Williams, and I visited Mr. Caldwell one Sunday afternoon, read Scripture, prayed, and talked with him about his spiritual condition, and as a result of our visit, he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and requested that I baptize him on the following day (Monday).

An account of his baptism by Miss Beda Campbell from Mr. Ruhama Baptist Church Record:

On Monday, May 15, 1922, by the request of Rev. L. R. Williams the pastor (S. A. Stroup) and the Deacons of Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church, with other members met at the home of Bro. Caldwell. Bro. Williams stated to the Church that Bro. John Caldwell presented himself as a candidate for baptism, after which to be a member in full fellowship.  The Church accepted the statement, and Bro. Caldwell was then baptized in a wooden pool in his yard by L. R. Williams, with the Pastor and some of the Deacons from Mt. Ruhama Church assisting.  He was carried to and from the pool by his friends.  The Church extended the right hand of Church fellowship to the aged man who was confined to his bed.

The Genealogy of James Caldwell and His Descendants

The following was written by Rev. D. harding Caldwell concerning John J. Caldwell:

while reflecting on the history of Catawba County, one cannot escape the area in Caldwell Township that is widely known as the Balls Creek Community.  For many years one segment of this community has been known as "Scraper Town."  This name came into being because of the prominent use of the name John (in that community).  My Grandfather's name was John J. Caldwell, and due to the fact that there were so many people named John living in the area, each one was distinguished by a nickname that was either a personal or an occupational characteristic of the individual.  My Grandfather and two of his sons, Joseph and Marion, were at one time engaged in making barrel hoops for home use as well as for the public.  The making of hoops by hand required a great deal of scraping and therefore my Grandfather received his distinguished title and was known as John "Ccraper".

John J. Caldwell died on 11 Sep 1922 in the Caldwell Township of Catawba County, NC.  His beloved wife Elizabeth died 12 Apr 1936.

John's Death Certificate lists his death date as "Sep. 11, 1922" and he was 84 years old.  His wife was listed as "Elizabeth Drum".  Cause of death was listed as "Old Age" and shows that there had been "No Medical Attention" at the time of his death.  His parents are listed as "David Caldwell" and "Fannie Sigmon".

Death Certificate for John J. Caldwell

John J. Caldwell and Elizabeth Sanders Drum Caldwell were buried in the cemetery of Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden, Catawba County, NC.
