John Robinson

Born: 28 Feb 1770, Lincoln County/now Catawba County, NC
Died:  19 Apr 1847, Catawba County, NC

John Robinson (Sr.) was the son of Isaac Robinson and Katherine Perkins.

Record of the Robinson Family
Written by W.A. Day
Sherrills Ford, North Carolina

John Robinson was born in Lincoln County, now Catawba, on February 28, 1770.

Isaac Robinson had an uncle named Adam (Perkins) and when (Isaac's son) John was a boy, the Robinsons moved to Haywood County, NC.  Adam Perkins was an old bachelor, living by himself and when the (Isaac) Robinsons all moved off to Haywood County, he begged Isaac Robinson, who was his nephew, to let John, then a boy, stay and live with him.  His (John's) father (Isaac) left him in the old man's care and when he (John) grew up and married, the old man told him to bring his wife there for that was his home.  When Adam Perkins died at a very old age, about 1798, he gave him (John Robinson) the plantation on which he lived.

Just as his uncle Adam Perkins had promised, he left all of his belongings to John Robinson.

John Robinson married Jane Clark.

Record of the Robinson Family
Written by W.A. Day
Sherrills Ford, North Carolina

John Robinson married Jane Clark (b. 1769 - d. 1846), an orphan girl living with her uncle, Captain Crawford, a Revolutionary soldier, in Iredell County, opposite where the old Long Island Cotton Mill used to stand.  Jane was born December 20, 1769.  About the year 1808, Isaac Robinson, then getting old, persuaded him to move to Haywood County, and John lived there for seven years.  At the death of his father, he left his place and moved back to his old home on the Catawba River.

Uncle John Robinson and Aunt Rachel Long (two of John Sr. and Jane's Children) were both born in Haywood County, NC.  John Robinson Sr. died April 19, 1847, and Jane his wife, died July 22, 1846.  Both buried at Rehobeth.  They kept up their visits every year as long as the old people lived, making the trips on horseback.

The 1800 Census shows John Robinson living in Lincoln County, NC.  He was about 30 years old and was married.  This Census shows a male and a female between the ages of 26 and 44.  Records indicate that John and Jane would have had three daughters (Cyntha, Mary and Suzanne) all under 10 years of age by this time - which is what this Census shows.  There is a female aged "45 or over"  that could have been either John's mother.  There are also a few other children that I have no idea where they come from.  They could have been nephews and nieces. This Census also seems to indicate that there were 8 slaves.  If this is indeed true, they possible could have been inherited.

John Robinson's WILL
Dated: 29 Oct 1843

In the name of God, Amen:

I, John Robinson of the County of Catawba and State of North Carolina now weak of body and strength, but of perfect and sound mind and memory, Blessed by God, and calling to mind my mortality, do make, constitute, and ordain this my last will and testament, viz: My soul I resign to the powers above, from whence it came, and my body I request that it shall be decently put into the earth after my death, and as to what worldly property God in his providence has been pleased to endow me with I will and bequeath it as follows:

I will and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife, Jane (Clark) Robinson, the whole use of my plantation whereon I now live, containing two hundred and eight acres more or less, during her natural life, and the property of every kind which I am possessed of at my death, after paying off my debtors both burying charges and honest debts and after death, I order that the plantation whereon I now live shall be equally divided between my four sons.

Adam Perkins Robinson to have his share where he now lives during his and his wife's natural lifetime or her widowhood, and after their death this share of my land to be equally divided between their three sons, namely - John, James and Adam.

I will and bequeath to my second son Isaac Osborne Robinson, one fourth part of the plantation where I now live, and that he shall have his share where he now lives.

I will and bequeath also to my third son, John Simpson Robinson, one fourth of the plantation where I now live and to have his share laid off where he formerly lived.

I will and bequeath to my fourth son, William Marion Robinson, one fourth of the plantation where I now live, and to have his share laid off where I now live.

And I order that all these four shares shall be laid off so that each of my four sons can have a cartway to the river or branch for the convenience of water.

I also bequeath unto my second daughter, Betsey's children, the one eighth part of which I shall hereafter mention. (Betsy was Elizabeth Robinson, the widow of Rev. Henry Asbury).

I also bequeath unto Polly Holdsclaw, my granddaughter, one side saddle, one cow and calf, bed and bedding and one half of the geese.  (Polly was the daughter of Jane Robinson and Lewis Holdsclaw)

I will and bequeath to my fourth daughter, Rachel Eveline Long, one dollar.

I also will and bequeath to my fifth daughter Sarah Ann Day, one horse to be valued at fifty dollars, if she does not get one before I die.

I also will unto William Marion Robinson the balance of my stock, namely horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, household and kitchen furniture, and all my farming and mechanical tools.

I also order that the plantation I now own in the county of Haywood, North Carolina, in case I do not dispose of or sell previous to my death, I all it to be divided between my eight (living) children or their heirs, namely: Adam Perkins Robinson, Isaac O. Robinson, John S. Robinson, William Marion Robinson, Betsey Asbury, Jane Holdsclaw, Rachel E. Long and Sarah Ann Day or their heirs, after my honest debts, doctor bills and burial charges are paid.

I also order that if any of the above mentioned heirs or legatees shall ever attempt, either by law or otherwise to break or disanul this will, that they shall be cut out of anything that is left to them in the former part of this will, and their share to be equally divided between all the rest of my heirs by law.

I also nominate my two sons, Isaac O. and John S. Robinson to execute this my last will and testament.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this the twenty ninth day of October in the year of our Lord, On Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Three.

The land records of Haywood County from the year 1809 show that Isaac Robinson, Sr. deeded land to Isaac Robinson, Jr., John Robinson, Aaron Robinson, William Robinson and Richard Robinson.  We believe these men could be John Robinson's brothers.  John speaks of his plantation in Haywood County in his will.  Uncle Billy Day (W.A. Day) tells in his writings of John going to help his father in Haywood County in about 1808.
