The Genealogy of James Caldwell and His Descendants
By Ray Von Caldwell

Many of the dates concerning David and Fanny Caldwell and their children were found on a certificate owned by Mrs. Bertha Caldwell Reinhardt of Statesville, NC.

the 1850 Catawba County, NC, Census shows the David Caldwell family (# 433) living in close proximity to the Thomas Loftin family (# 431).

David (age 43) and his wife Fanny/Fannie (age 38) were living in the Caldwell Township section of Catawba County along with six of their children and his mother, Sally (Sallie Millie Bandy, age 66).  David lived on a farm with Real Estate value of $200.  Oldest son William J. Caldwell (age 14) was listed as not being able to read or write.  The other children in the Caldwell family were, John J. Caldwell (age 12), Abel F. Caldwell (age 9), Emeline Caldwell (age 5) and Daniel Caldwell (age 2).

The quality of the 1860 Catawba County, NC, Census is poor but we can tell that David (age 54) and Fanny (age 48) had seven of their children living with them.  John J. Caldwell was 22, Abel F. Caldwell was 18, Emeline Caldwell was 15, Sarah Caldwell was 11, Martha Caldwell was 8, Mary Adeline Caldwell was 6 and Rufus Caldwell was 3.  Son Daniel Caldwell had died on 08 Jun 1858 at the age of 10.

David and eldest son John J. Caldwell worked the family farm.  David Caldwell's Real Estate value was $700 and his Personal Estate was valued at $650.  Children Abel, Emeline, Sarah and Martha attended school.  This Census shows that David's wife, Fanny, could not read or write.

The 1870 Census shows David (age 63) and Frances (age 54) still living in the Caldwell Township section of Catawba County, NC.  Their son Abel Caldwell married Rhoda Marvina Drum and was living nearby.  Abel and Rhoda had two children, Susan E. (age 3) and Mary C. (age 1).  The widow of David's brother John Caldwell (1814 - 1860), Margaret Eatton Caldwell (age 48) was also living nearby with her four children, James (age 28), Gilbert (age 26), Alexander (age 21), Mary (age 17) and David (age 14)

The Real Estate value of David and Fannie/Frances Caldwell's farm had increased to $900 but their Personal Estate value had decreased to $150.  The five youngest children were still living on the family farm, Emeline (age 25), Martha (age 17), Mary Adeline (age 15), Rufus (age 12) and Rhoda (age 8).  Even thought the 1860 Census shows Emeline, Sarah and Martha attending school, the 1870 say they (as well as youngest brother Rufus) could not read or write.
