Jacob Israel Aderhold (Aderholt)

Born: 16 Jun 1775, Yorktown, York Co., PA
Died:  01 May 1853, Cherryville, Gaston Co., NC

Jacob Israel Aderhold was born 16 Jun 1775, Christened 08 Jul 1775, in Yorktown, York County, Pennsylvania.  He was the third son of Frederick William Aderhold (b. 1748) and Maria Elizabetha Isheim.

Frederick Aderhold moved his family to Lincoln County, NC, in the late 1780s.

Jacob married Elizabeth Heavner, the daughter of Abraham Heavner and Katherine Brinkley, before 1800. He became a successful farmer and home owner. Elizabeth was born 04 Nov 1779.

The 1800 Lincoln County, NC, Census shows that Jacob was living near his father, Frederick, and brother, George. The Census further shows that Jacob and Elizabeth had one son, William Frederick Aderhold, and 1 slave.  This is the only Census, however, that ever showed them as slaveholders.

By 1830, Jacob and Elizabeth's two oldest son, William Frederick and David, were married and living with their families nearby. William had married Esther Abernathy Carroll on 04 Jul 1822 and David had married Sarah Rudisill on 13 Sep 1827. Jacob's age would have been 55 but he was incorrectly listed on the 60-70 age group. Elizabeth was 51. The children still living at home were: John Jacob, age 8, Emanuel Marcus, age 10, Jacob Israel II, age 15, Sarah Elizabeth, age 13, Anna, age 14, Elizabeth, age 17, Margaret, age 19, Barbara, age 20, and Catherine, age 22.

Cooking, canning, milking, churning and carrying water were all part of a days work for Elizabeth and the Aderhold girls.

The 1840 Census shows that Jacob and Elizabeth were still living in Lincoln County, NC, near their two eldest sons, William and David. William's wife, Esther, died on 07 Feb 1840, so she was not listed on the following Census. There were only four children still living with Jacob (age 65) and Elizabeth (age 61) on the family farm: John Jacob, Emanuel Marcus, Sarah Elizabeth and Anna.

By 1850, Jacob was 75 and Elizabeth was 71. Their son Emanuel Marcus, age 30, had assumed the Head of the household and had married Mary Rudisill in 1845. Emanuel and Mary had three children: Margaret, age 4, Alexander, age 2, and Monroe, age 1. More than likely, Emanuel had assumed control of the family farm and was tending to his elderly parents. Emanuel and Jacob were both still working as farmers.
