Hoyle married Mary Margaret Carpenter on 02 Aug
1842. She was the daughter of William Levi Carpenter
(1779 - 1845) and Amelia "Millie" Rudisill (1788 - 1859). |
|
|
|
The 1850 Census shows Heyl/Hoyle and Mary living
in Catawba County, NC with five of their children: Theodore
(age 7), Soloius - actually Fabius (age 5),
Frances Ann (age 3), Margaret A. (age 2) and
Mary E. (age 1). Hoyle was 38 and working as a
Tailor. The value of his Real Estate was $300. The Census shows
that everyone was born in Catawba County except for Hoyle's
wife, Mary. This is actually incorrect concerning
Hoyle. He was born in Lincoln County, NC, in 1814 becore it
became Catawba County, NC, in 1842. |
|
Nancy and Sarah Bumgarner were more than
likely a relative but there is no current information about
them. There is also no information on Andrew Carpenter. He may
have been a nephew of Mary's. |

By 1860, Hoyle and Mary had packed up their family
and moved to Carrollton, Carroll County, Arkansas. Hoyle
was 47 but it seems that Mary had not aged at all during
those 10 years and had actually gotten a little younger. Census
records provide a lot of information but it's not unusual for
them to also have incorrect information. Mary's correct
age would have been 41. |
|
Hoyle and Mary had seven children: Thomas F. T.
(age 17), Frances Ann (age 13), Margaret A.
(age 11), Mary C. (age 9), Wesley B. (age 7),
Benjamin F. (age 5 - a twin), Susan S. (age 5 - a
twin) and Harriet E. (age 2). Hoyle and Thomas
were working as farmers. Hoyle's Real Estate value was
$1000 and his Personal Estate value was $580. The Census further
shows that every one was born in North Carolina except for the
three youngest children. Benjamin and Susan were
born in Missouri and Harriet was born in Arkansas. Their
youngest daughter, Martha Virginia, is not listed on this
Census but she was also born in Arkansas. |

Some researchers say that
Hoyle Brown Witherspoon was killed by bushwhackers during
the Civil War while sitting on his front porch with
his son, Thomas Franklin Theodore Witherspoon, who was home on leave.
Thomas died on 17 Sep 1863 in Denver, Carroll County,
Arkansas, but Hoyle's death was not until three months
later on 17 Dec 1863. |

Hoyle and Mary's daughter Harriett
Elizabeth Witherspoon died on 21 Jun 1870 - the day
before the 1870 Census was taken. She was 12 years old. |
|
The 1870 Census shows Mary Margaret Carpenter Witherspoon
living in the Long Creek Township of Carrellton, Carroll County,
Arkansas. The three youngest children were still living at home.
They were: the Twins, Susan and Benjamin (age 14)
and Martha (age 8). |
|
Mary's brother, William Wesley Carpenter,
was living nearby with his second wife, Sina Josephine
Gregory Myers, and eight of his children:
Lawrence (age 19), (this was actually Laura Ann),
William Hyle (age 14), Eli Sina (age
13), Henrietta Josephine (age 10), Martha
Jane (age 7), Ruthie E. (age 4) and Stephen S.
(age 10 months - born in Aug 1869). There is no indication who
Eugene Gregory (age 8) is. |
|
Mary Carpenter Witherspoon's nephew,
James M. Carpenter, was living near his father,
William Wesley Carpenter, along with his wife,
Parlee (age 17) and their 9 month old son William R.
Carpenter. |

still living in the Long Creek Township of Carrollton, Carroll
