Daisy Lemyre Sigmon - She
Loved Genealogy |
by Curtis D. Loftin |
|
I didn't know Daisy Lemyre Sigmon very well but I do know
how much she loved genealogy. Over the years she would call us
on the phone and ask for information about our children and
grandchildren - collecting each piece of data and storing it
away for future generations. |
|
I didn't get started into genealogy, myself, until after I
retired from teaching in 2005. Fortunately for me, there were
older family members like Daisy that had been collecting
data and information for many many years. Like Daisy, I
also descended from
Patrick Sylvanus Setzer
(b. 11 May 1843 - d. 20 Apr 1923) and
Margaret Ann Elizabeth Witherspoon
(b. 02 Nov 1845 - d. 06 Dec 1932). So when the time came to
start collecting photos to supplement my research, I went to my
aunt
Frances Loftin Cook and asked her if she knew of anyone who
might have photos of Patrick & Margaret Witherspoon
Setzer. Aunt Frances told me, "Go and see Daisy Lemyre
Sigmon. She might." |
|
Accompanied by my cousin Peggy Loftin Brotherton, we went
to visit Daisy at the rest home in Newton where she was
living. Even though I had only been working on my family
genealogy briefly, I always took copies of photos to share when
I was going to ask to borrow some. I did the same thing with
Daisy. Peggy and I walked in to see Daisy and I was
amazed as just how much data she had collected. She had more
information on my nieces and nephews that I did. We chatted for
a while and then I gave her some photos of her mother (Daisy
McNeill Setzer Sigmon) and my grandmother (Ida
Setzer Loftin). I told her, "I don't know if you have these,
but I though you might like to add theme to your collection".
She was grateful and expressed her appreciation. After we looked
at the photos, I asked her if she knew of anyone who might have
photos of her mother and my grandmother's parents. |
|
She leaned her head to the side and looked at me closely, then
walked over to a closet in her room and took out a pocketbook.
She opened the pocketbook and took out several items that were
wrapped in paper towels and brought them over for me to look at.
As it turned out, she had three tin-type photos of Patrick
Setzer, Margaret Witherspoon Setzer and Margaret's
parents (Miles & Sarah Aderholdt Witherspoon). I was so
excited. |

I asked her if she would consider letting me borrow them so that
I could scan them if I promised to return them before the end of
the day - and she said, "Yes". |
|
This exchange of photos took place in 2007 and Daisy Lemyre
Sigmon passed away in 2008. Since that day, I've made
numerous copies of the photos and shared them with other family
members in the
Setzer and
Loftin families and at the various family reunions. |
|
Thanks Daisy for all the work you've done in the area of
family genealogy and for your willingness to share what you had.
You will be missed. |

|
A very special thank you to
Daisy Lemyre Sigmon & Nannie Elizabeth Sigmon Sigman (daughters
of Daisy McNeill Setzer Sigmon). Most of the genealogy
information that we have on the Setzer family if because of the
tireless efforts of these two ladies. |

Daisy never married and had no children. I'd
love to fill this page with photos and stories about her. |
