Sam married Sue Amy Crawford on 12 Aug 1939 in Catawba County, NC. Amy was born 31 Jul 1914 in Catawba County, NC.

Sam died 14 Nov 1970 from viral pneumonia as a result of cancer in his left lung. He was buried in Bethlehem United Methodist Cemetery, Catawba Co, North Carolina. Sam's occupation had been as a furniture worker.

Amy died 28 Feb 1998 and was also buried in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont, NC.
