James Loftin was the son of Edmund Loftin (b. Abt. 1812) and Dovey Newman.  James was born 22 May 1849 in Catawba County, NC.
 
 
The 1850 Catawba County Census shows Edmund, age 40, married to Dovey, age 35.  They live on the family farm with a real estate value of $400.  There were four children living with the family: Emma, Ellen, Effie (Effa) and James.

The 1860 Census shows that Edmund and Dovey were living in the Sherrills Ford Township of Catawba County.  The real estate value had reduced to $256.  All four children were still living at home - including James who was 11 years old.

By 1870, James' mother (Dovey Newman Loftin) had died and his father had married Mary Reynolds.  James was not living with his father by the time the information for the 1870 Census was collected.
 
 
James married Victoria Day, daughter of Hanard Day on 12 Aug 1869.  Victoria was born 15 Feb 1851, daughter of Haner Day and Sarah Louisa Sherrill (his cousin).

Mr. James Loftin Dies at County Home

 
     Mr. James Loftin died Thursday morning at the Iredell County Home.  Funeral service and interment took place Friday morning at 11 o'clock at Bethel Church, East Monbo.
     Mr. Loftin was about 80 years old.  Surviving are his widow, who is also an inmate of the county home; three sons and two daughter.  They are Mr. Robert Loftin, of Alaska; Messrs. Brooks and Tate Loftin, of East Monbo; Mrs. John Rogers, of Huntersville; and Mrs. Annie Freeze, of Mooresville.
 
 
 
 
His Death Certificate lists his birthdate as "May 22 1849" in Catawba County, NC.  His father is listed as "Edmond Loften" and his mother "Dovey Newman".  His occupation is listed as "Farmer" and cause of death was listen as "Senility".

Mrs. Victoria Loftin is Claimed By Death

 
     Mrs. Victoria Loftin, widow of James Loftin, died at the Iredell County Home at 1 o'clock Saturday morning.  Mrs. Loftin would have been 81 years old Monday, as she was born February 15, 1851.  Her husband died three years ago.
     Mrs. Loftin is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Rogers, of Huntersville, and Mrs. Freeze, of Mooresville; by three sons, Mr. Tate Loftin, East Monbo; Mr. Brooks Loftin, of Catawba; and Mr. Robert Loftin, of California.
     The funeral service and interment were at East Monbo Sunday afternoon.
 
 
 
Victoria Day Loftin died 13 Feb 1932 in Fallstown Township, Iredell County, NC.  She was 81 years old.  Her Death Certificate shows her father was "Hanard Day" as well as her birth and death dates.
