Grady worked as a "Comber" or "Carder". Carding machines perform a combing operation, aligning the fibers so they will make a strong thread when spun. The process leaves the operator covered in cotton fluff. Seen as a low-status job by others in the industry. Helen's job as a "Finisher" meant that she tidied up the surface of the cloth after bleaching.

On 08 Sep 1940, Harold's sister Martha Frances Loftin was born.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of 07 Dec 1941 was a surprise military strike against the United States. Ninety minutes after it began, the attack was over. In total, 2,403 Americans died and 1,178 were wounded. Eighteen ships were sunk or run aground, including five battleships. The day after the attack, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his famous "Infamy Speech" to a Joint Session of Congress, calling for a formal declaration of war on the Empire of Japan. Congress obliged his request less than an hour later. On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States.

Harold's father, Grady, enlisted in the U.S. military on 09 Dec 1944 at Camp Croft, South Carolina, leaving behind a wife and two small children. Harold was 7 years old at the time and his sister Martha Frances was 4 years old.

John was 34 years old and working as a "Card Room Manager" at the Cotton Mill. Bessie was 31.
