Manley Wilson Cranford, Jr. was born 06 Sep 1860 in Catawba, Catawba County, North Carolina to Manley Wilson Cranford, Sr. (1821-1889) and Mary Martha Lomax.

 
 
The 1879 Catawba County Census shows Manley Wilson Cranford Sr and Martha living in the Mountain Creek Township of Catawba County with their four children: Laura (age 15), Mary (age 13), Nancy (age 11) and Manly Wilson Jr. (age 9). Manley Wilson Cranford Sr. was 47 years old and Martha was 40. The Real Estate Value of his farm was $500 and his Person Estate was valued at $200.

Manley W. Cranford, Jr., age 20, married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizey" Caldwell, age 20, daughter of Phillip & Sarah Caldwell, on 18 Mar 1880.  The person performing the marriage was J. A. Sherrill (Minister), and the Witnesses were Charles L. McCaul, L. A. Killian, and Jay Beatty.
 
 
The 1910 Census shows Manley Wilson Cranford, Jr. (age 49) living in Mecklenburg County, NC with his wife, Elizabeth (age 4) and his mother Martha (age 87). The family was living on North Main Street in Deweese Township of Davidson.  Their children in the family home were Grace (age 21), Spencer (age 19), Reid (age 14), Charlotte (age 12) and Elizabeth (age 9). Mr. Cranford, 22 years of age, was a member of the Marine Corps, and died in France on July 19th, as a result of wounds received in the terrific fighting at the Battle of Soissons.

Spencer Rouse Cranford enlisted in the US Marines during WWI on 29 Nov 1917.  This particular muster showes that he was part of Company I and was stationed at Paris Island, SC.

Death Certificate for Spencer Rouse Cranford

 
The Death Certificate for Spencer Rouse Cranford lists his birth date (7-12-1893) and his death date as (7-7-1960).  Spencer was age 66, married to Thelma Collins Cranford, and his parents are listed as Manley Cranford (Jr) and Sarah Caldwell.  It shows that he had served in the military during WWI.  Spencer and Thelma had been living at 940 Bromley Rd, Charlotte, NC.  He died at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC.  Cause of Death was listed as "Uremia" (or E.Coli food contamination).  Contributing causes included "Renal Shutdown" (kidney failure), "myocardial infarction with hypotension" (heart attack) and "generalized arteriosclerosis" (hardening of the arteries).  He lived for one week from the onset of his illness until his death.  He was buried at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.
