The 1900 Census shows William and Sallie A. Aderholt
living in the Cherryville Township of Gaston County, NC.
William is 33 - as is Sallie. Their children are
Claudie M. (age 13), Alvin L. (age 11),
Edith E. (age 9), Lizzie M. (age 8), Maggie B.
(age 5), Vida V. (age 3) and William Allen
(age 7 months). This Census lists birth year and month.
William's widowed sister Ida Aderholt Nolan
and her two children Mattie and Lizzie are also
living with him - as was his 86 year old Aunt, Margaret
Esker. The Census shows that William owns his home
(and doesn't pay rent) and that it is mortgage Free. The Census
seems to show that it is not a farm, but that must be an
error since William, Claudie, Alvin,
Edith, Lizzie and Ida have a listed occupation
as farmer or farm laborer. |

By 1920, William Luther Aderholt had moved his family to
Florida. The 1920 Census shows them living, Precinct 2, Dania,
Broward County, FL. William Luther is 53 and
working on a "Truck Farm". |
|
What exactly is a truck farm? Does it have something to do with
trucks? There is no connection whatever between truck farms and
motor transportation. Long before motor trucks were even dreamed
of (at least as far back as 1785), the word "truck" was
used to mean garden vegetables intended for sale in the local
markets. |
|
The 1920 Census shows that only Alvin Lee Aderholt
(age31) and William Allen Aderholt (age 20) were
still living with their parents. The Census shows that the
Aderholt family owned their home mortgage free. |
