Emanuel Marcus Aderholt     Born: 20 Apr 1820, Lincoln County, North Carolina Died: 26 Feb 1907, Gaston County, North Carolina   Emanuel Marcus Aderholt was the eleventh child born to Jacob Israel Aderholdt (1775-1853) and Elizabeth Heavner (1779-1856). He was born 20 Apr 1820 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.     Emanuel married (1) Mary R. Rudisill about 1845. Mary was born 29 Apr 1829 In Lincoln County, NC, to Jonas Rudisill (1791-1857) and Anna Beam (1804-1877). Rebecca was born 20 Nov 1832 in Lincoln Co, NC, to Absalom Brown (1792-1875) and Elizabeth Killian (1793-1837). He was reported to have been Captain of a North Carolina Company during the Mexican-American War between 1846 to 1848. He was wounded once during battle but survived to return home to his family.     With the arrival of the American Civil War, he did not sit idly by. In 1861, Emanuel enlisted with the Union army, but was eventually forced to join the Confederacy for the sake of family. He served under General Lee and participated in engagements at Richmond and Petersburg. Emanuel was part of Company G, 57th Regiment NC Infantry. He entered the war as a Private, but was serving as a Sergeant at the end of the war.     Emanuel was once attacked by a freed slave after the Civil War. The man crept up on him, ambushed him, and struck Emanuel on the back of the head with a wooden truncheon. Dazed but still conscious, Emanuel grabbed his rifle and aimed it at the bandit, who was attempting to rob him. Emanuel fired his weapon and shot an ear completely off of the man's head.       The 1870 Census shows Emanuel Marcus Aderholt and his second wife Rebecca living in the Cherryville Township of Gaston County, NC. Emanuel is 50 and working as a farmer on the family farm. Rebecca is 38 and the children's ages are: Lafayette (21), John (19), Jane (17), Jacob (15), (James (12), Mary (7), William (4) and Ida (1). There was also a "Domestic Servant", Letta Wayner (age 28), living with the Aderholt family. Emanuel is 60 and Rebecca Elizabeth is 47. Five of their children are still living on the family farm: Mary Martha "Mattie" (age 16), William Luther (age 13), Ida Elizabeth (age 11), Lee E. (age 9) and Martin (age 3).
