Name Origin: UNKNOWN
It has long been believed that the surname Loftin originated from England where there was a village of Loftus and Lofthouse, both in Yorkshire. There are "Loftings" living in England, but when Curtis Loftin (US) and Phil Lofting (England) compared DNA through Family Tree DNA, they were not the same. In 2016, Curtis Loftin took an Ethnicity DNA Test with Ancestry.com. The results of that test showed that less than 1% of Curtis' ethnicity was from Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). The Test did, however, show that he was 79% West European (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland). The other parts of his ethnicity were: 10% Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal, France), 4% Ireland (which also includes Scotland and Wales), 2% Scandinavian (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland), 2% Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey), 1% Italy/Greece. Curtis took his first DNA Test with Family Tree DNA in the Fall of 2006. This test checked Male DNA which is passed down from Grandfather, to Father, to Son, to Grandson, and so on, virtually unchanged over the generations. Through this test, Curtis matched DNA with male cousins from around the world. The most significant ones were the "Loftins" who lived in the US. When ancestral lineages were compared, connections were found many generations back, indicating that there were no "illegitimacies" in our lineage at least as far back as James Loftin and Susannah Sherrill. Spelling variations of this family name include: Loftin, Lofting, Loftingh, Lofton, Loftis, Loftus, Loftiss, Loftos, Lofthouse, Loftinck, Leftinck, Loflink, Laughton and others. There are several locations around the world that seem to carry the Loftin name in addition to the villages of Loftus and Lofthouse in Yorkshire, England. The Lofoten Islands are a chain of islands in the county of Nordland in northern Norway. There is also a southern Norway town called Lofthus near the Hardanger Fjord. This is interesting because we do have a DNA connection (even though it is only 2%) with the Scandinavian country of Norway. * The Loftin family surname can be found in Virginia as early as 1638 on various deeds and records. * The name Loftin can be found throughout the US, but most prominently in North Carolina and Texas. In the US, the largest number of Loftins reside in North Carolina, Texas and Alabama, but there are also sizeable groups in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
