Campmeeting

Established: August 1853
Buffalo Shoals Rd, Catawba, NC

The Balls Creek Campground was established in August 1853 under the guidance of community Methodists - eight years before the start of the American Civil War.  The first services were held under a brush arbor by Rev. H. H. Durant and Rev. Lewis Scarborough. It was at that time that a dozen or so families built permanent wooden structures (called "tents").

The Arbor

Reference is made to the Balls Creek Campground in the earliest conference records of the Catawba Methodist Church.  Campmeeting has been held each year in August since it’s formation in 1853.

Tents

Those who attend Balls Creek Campgroud live in "tents" during the two weeks of campmeeting. Over the years the number of tents increased - finally maxing out with tent number 302. The last tent and several others were built by Sam Loftin of Catawba, NC.

The various tents are painted with multiple colors giving an additional festive element to the campground.

The Shack

Curtis Loftin: "The 'Shack' at the campground has to be a favorite place for all the kids and most of the adults, too.  As a child I was thrilled to buy a paddle-ball, a snow cone, a coke, a hotdog, or some ice cream there.  The wooden windows lift to allow patrons the opportunity to see what's available for purchase".

1944 Campground Thefts

Thefts at the Campground: Around 1944, there were a number of thefts at the campground. Thirty four thefts to be exact. What what was stolen? Stoves - cooking stoves. The campground reimbursed tent owners for their stoves - two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50).

A partial list of those who had their stoves stolen included: Thomas Setzer (Tent 32), Fred Beatty (Tent 37), John M. Setzer (Tent 52), C.B. Witherspoon (Tent 73), Mrs. Ida Setzer Loftin (Tent 88) and Mrs. Effie Setzer (Tent 181). Checks from the campground were issued on 12, Jan 1944.

1956 Campground Fire

In 1956, there was a massive fire at the campground that destroyed 108 of the wooden tents. This newspaper article from THE OBSERVER-NEWS ENTERPRISE, dated Wednesday, May 9, 1956, tells about the damage.

SCENE OF BALLS CREEK CAMPGROUND FIRE. This scene shows an overall view of the Balls Creek campground following a fire yesterday that destroyed fully half of the "tents" there. The scene in the left part of the picture shows the west side of the campground, where the fire originated, and where all tents in its path were destroyed. This picture was taken near the spring, at the south end of the campground. The top of the undamaged arbor can be seen at the center of the picture, and at right is where the fire was stopped on the south line of tents. The fire burned over the area at left, around the far northwest corner, and up the north line of tents, about opposite the arbor on the far side of the picture. The extent of damage to tents in the path of the fire is seen in the leveled ruins, tin roofing and seared trees, like the oak at left, which were completely destroyed and blackened from base to tip. This picture was taken from the top of the commissary building at the south end of the campground near the spring.

The Loftin Family & Campmeeting

William Alexander Loftin (a local Methodist attending Center Methodist Church) loved campmeeting and attended the Balls Creek Campground just like his father, James Franklin Loftin, before him.  Alec greeted his kin in the tent his father had raised in the 1850s and passed the tradition of attending campmeeting on to his children.

In August 2010, a 101-year-old Lois Loftin Mundy (daughter of Arthur Lee Loftin and granddaughter of William Alexander Loftin) describes her grandfather Alec as a "not very tall" and "slim man" who loved his family, loved his church and loved campmeeting.

Alec's eldest son, Alonzo Lester Loftin,  inherited his father's "tent" at the camp ground and shared the campmeeting experience with his own family.  It was a family tradition.

Alonzo's first wife, Cornelia Estelle Lowrance, died in February of 1904.  According to Peggy Loftin Brotherton, Alonzo first met his second wife, Ida Lillian Setzer, at the Balls Creek Campground that year.  "She was wearing a blue-tiered chiffon dress and when he saw her he said, 'There goes the woman I’m gonna marry.'”  Alonzo got up, pursued her, and eventually wed her in November of the same year.  He was 28 and she was 20.

Alonzo had 5 children by Cornelia and another 14 by Ida.  Willie Goble Loftin (wife of Sam William Loftin) said, “When the family all gathered together, they had two tents to house the crowd. There was a small door between the two tents”.  The original Loftin family tents were located at 69 & 70.  Tent 70 was eventually sold, but tent 67 passed to Alonzo and Ida's daughter, Frances Loftin Cook

Most of Alonzo's children eventually had tents of their own.  Sam’s tent was 298 (although he built, lived in, and sold several others), Os’ was 297, Daisy Pearl 300, Sadie 106, Nannie 54, Charlie 183, and Allie 185.  Thelma also had a tent (not sure of the number).  Theodore Roosevelt "Speedo" built four tents (269, 270, 271, 272). Tents were re-numbered by 1963 and Speedo's tent numbers were  - 286, 287, 288 and 289.

For many years the Loftin Family Reunion was held at the Campground

Early Campmeeting Photos

Curtis Loftin: It was not uncommon for there to be a photographer set up at the campground over the years during campmeeting. Many of the photos that are available to my family today are because of those early campmeeting photos. Not only am I grateful for the quantity of campmeeting photos of my parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, but I'm also grateful for the quality of the photos. These campmeeting photos were "usually" better than most other family photos of that time period. You'll notice as you peruse this page the number of photos that were taken by a professional photographer during campmeeting.

Curtis Loftin: "These are the tents that I knew about from my childhood, the 1960s, through adulthood,
until many of the original tents were passed on to children or sold".

Many members of the Loftin, Setzer and Goble families have owned tents at the Balls Creek Campground.  As the years have passed, older tents were torn down and larger more modern ones were constructed on the same site.  Tents have changed colors.  As parents died, family tents usually passed to their children, grandchildren or other relatives.  All the tents originally had dirt floors covered with wood shavings.  The fresh smell of the shavings eventually gave way to concrete floors for many of the tents.  Most tents were originally one-story-buildings. Eventually, however, most became two-story-buildings to allow for additional  sleeping areas in the upstairs part.

Half of the tents in the campground burned in a fire in 1953-54.  The debris was eventually cleared and the old lots were marked off for new tents.  Nannie & Wade had previously had a tent, but had sold it.  According to Glenn Martin, about the time that these lots became available, Wade & Nannie Martin, Howard & Wadine Martin Smith, Jessie Martin, Coyte & Alice Martin, and Bill & Elma Martin decided to go in together to purchase a lot and build a tent.  None of the families was interested in staying overnight, but were more interested in having a location to spend time with family and to have lunch after Sunday worship services during campmeeting.  By 2012, with the passing of most of the original owners, the ownership of the tent was held by Glenn & Dot Robinson Martin (son of Bill & Elma) and Howard & Wadine Smith.

Thefts at the Campground: Around 1944, there were a number of thefts at the campground. Thirty four to be exact. What what was stolen? Stoves - wood burning cook stoves. Ida Setzer Loftin (Tent 88) was one of those unfortunate tent owners who had her stove stolen. The campground reimbursed tent owners for their stoves - two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50). No. 298 -Tent of Sam William Loftin & Willie Goble Loftin

Sam built his tent No. 298 on the vacant lot beside of Eb Hunsucker in the 1960s.  When it was originally built, the height of Sam's tent was the same as Eb's and those to the left of the photo - which provided limited room for standing in the upstairs portion.  After Os built his tent (No. 297), Sam tore the top off of No. 298 and raised the roof to the same level as Os' and those tents to the right side.  This allowed for more standing room in the upstairs portion and thus more beds.  Tent No. 298 had five double beds in the upstairs of Tent No. 298 and one downstairs that Sam & Willie used.  There were curtains hung in the upstairs portion to provide privacy for the various sleeping areas.

Sam William Loftin (and his wife Willie Aleen Goble) built a tent on the side of the campground close to the "Shack" when they were first married but eventually sold it.  In the 1960s, Sam built a tent to share with his children and grandchildren on the last row - tent number 298.

TENT No. (Unknown) - Near the old spring

Willie Goble Loftin said that Sam built his first tent down near the old spring (and "Shack") before Billy Ray was born. Unfortunately, she didn't remember the exact location or tent number.  She also said that after they sold that tent, they rented up next to Glenn & Alie Loftin Lee. The following two photos were taken at the same time.

Curtis Loftin: "In 2016, my cousin Norma Cook Stewart loaned me a book about the Campground that had been produced by the Catawba County Historical Association in 2002. The book listed tent owners in 1947,  1957 and 1963.  I found out that Dad/Sam Loftin had two tents in 1947. They were 227 and 228".

One of the fun aspects of campmeeting is walking around the main circle - and visiting with family and friends.  As we head from late afternoon toward evening, the crowd begins to grow.  Many Tents on the main circle also have upstairs balconies.

People begin to arrive for the last Saturday night gospel singing

Annual Tent Tax is about $100 for the two week stay and is paid during August.  Collected Tent Tax helps the Campground Trustees maintain the grounds, the bathrooms, the Arbor, among other things.

If fortunate enough to own a tent at the campground, you can usually park two cars behind your Tent.  If you've a visitor, there is usually ample parking - but sometimes across the road or in the grass areas near the entrances.

16 Feb 2013 - Snow

Normally there's no one staying at the Campground during the Winter months, but when Catawba County had a beautiful snow on Saturday, February 16, 2013, Matthew Brotherton was there with his cell phone/camera.  Thanks Matthew for the photos.

TENT OWNERSHIP

Over the years, tent ownership has changed. Even the tent numbers have changed as additional tents were added. Tent ownership usually passed down from generation to generation but sometimes ownership was sold outside of the family, too. The following list of tent owners from 1947, 1957 and 1963 are listed in "Balls Creek Campmeeting - 150 Years of Faith, Family & Friends", published by the Catawba County Historical Association in 2004.

PARKING

Parking at the Campground is always limited during the two weeks of campmeeting. There is usually enough room for a family to park two cars behind their tent, but others have to park in the grass or across the road.

1960s parking on both sides of the highway

RESTROOMS

Originally each tent at the campground had their own "outhouse" at the edge of the woods.

1960s Outhouses

With the passing of time, public facilities were provided at various places around the campground complete with toilets and sinks. Because of sanitation, private bathrooms were, and still are, forbidden.
