Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic

Kayli's 2020 year took a strange turn in early March 2020 when the entire world was faced with the Coronavirus Pandemic (officially named "COVID-19" by the World Health Organization). At first, groups of over 100 were discouraged from meeting, then groups of 50, then 20, then 10, and finally 2. We quickly became familiar with the phrase "social-distancing" - a guide to stay at least 6 feet away from others. As the number of coronavirus cases quickly escalated to over 1,000,000 confirmed cases world-wide, countries went into lockdown while most of the states in the USA, including North Carolina, issued "Stay-at-Home" orders. The US restricted non-US citizens from entering the country and many people on vacation out of the US found it difficult to get back home.

Churches were discouraged from meeting and most pastors did their Sunday sermons on Facebook or some other streaming service.

Travis Triplett, Pastor of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba County (and Ali's paternal Great-Grandmother Willie Goble Loftin's former church pastor and church), preached ona flatbed truck outside of his church while church members stayed in their cars and listened to the sermon from there. Many other churches around the country started doing the same thing and the phrase "drive-in church" was born. Officers in some states started "ticketing" some of these church members resulting in churchs suing their cities for infringing on their constutional rights to assemble - especially since they were abiding by the "social-distancing" guidelines. Some churches, however, refused to stop having Sunday services and continued to meet inside of the building, refusing to "social distance" - saying that the constution guaranted them the right to assemble. Those pastors were right about the constitution but unfortunately, the coronavirus was spread among many of those church pastors and members. Many of which died.

Schools were closed - as well as hair salons and many other businesses that were nott considered "essential". Essential jobs and businesses included doctors & nurses, law enforcement, dental offices, pharmacies, clinical industries, food and beverage producers and distributors (like Walmart and other grocery stores), charity organizations, religious centers, media, gas stations, financial and insurance institutions, hardware supply stores, construction, plumbers, electricians, exterminators, cleaning and janitorial services, mail, laundry services, legal services, defense and military contractors, hotels & motels, funeral services, pet & feed stores, beer, wine and liquior stores.

Catawba County School's students were sent home in March. From there, they completed daily class instruction via internet classes. For those families that did not have computers or internet, schools loaned computers and Charter/Spectrum Internet provided free service to two months. This is how Kayli's 2nd grade school year ended. They never did go back to school for the remainder of the school year and annual testing was dropped.

Kayli's dad, Philip, worked from home and his company continued to operate, as did Uncle Brad's company. Aunt Beth was a teacher and continued to teach via the internet at home.

As shortages of medical and cleaning supplies increased (surgical masks, surgical goves, hand sanitiser, etc.), US citizens were discouraged from purchasing surgical masks so that they could be sent to doctors, nurses and other healtcare workers working in the heart of the pandemic around the US. Many manufacturers changed the type of product they manufactured in order to help with pandemic supplies but also to keep their business open. One company that produced burbon, started producing hand sanitider and became "essential". Kayli's Uncle Brad's company, NUFABRX, that produced copper-infused-yarn started producing copper-infused surgical masks and the company became "essential".

We learned that the coronavirus was "extremely" contagious and by 07 April, the US had 394,587 confirmed cases and 13,000 deaths from the virus. North Carolina saw its biggest jump in the number of COVID-19 related deaths with 13 deaths in a single day - a total of 52 deaths and 3,250 confirmed cases of the virus in the state in early April. Catawba County had 25 confirmed cases of the virus and had one death. On 07 April, the US had over 1,700 deaths in a single day.

The elderly and those that already had underlying medical conditions (like diabetes, asthma and other breathing problems, etc.) were extremely susceptible to the virus and most didn't survive if they got COVID-19. As a result, Kayli's grandparents self-quarantined themselves in their homes - even from their children and grandchildren in order to avoid the possibility of catching the virus.

As world-wide panic escalated, people started hoarding food (especially canned goods), cleaning supplies and essentials like toilet paper. In Walmart, if you weren't there early in the morning, there was no toilet paper later in the day. Walmart eventually started limiting the number of many items to "2" in order to help restrict hoarding. Eventually Walmart was forced to take stricter contingecies with employees and customers. Only 20 customers were allowed into the store for every 1000 sq ft of store space. When one cutomer came out of the store, one more was allowed to go in. Markers were placed on the floors and customers were instruced to go down isles in one direction only.

Large cities like New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston and Denver became "hot beds" for the virus. Virus-models speculated that we could have as many as 100,000 to 200,000 deaths in the US.  By the end of April, those numbers dropped. In North Carolina, Mecklenburg and Wake counties were the haredest hit with coronavirus cases and deaths.

Thanksgiving

Due to the world-wide coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19, 2020 was different that anything we had ever experienced. In March, the entire world went into "lockdown". We didn't see the kids or grandkids for months. Only "essential" businesses were allowed to open - such at doctors offices, hospitals, government buildings, pharmacies, building supply stores, food processing plants, grocery stores, fast food restaurants, postal services and other businesses that provided things necessary for human survival. Schools were even closed for the rest of the year - eventually opting for on-line classes for kids. Some churches completely closed while others refused to shut their doors. Our church provided streaming services on line while others opted to have services outdoors with church members remaining in their cars.

For the first time in our lives we heard about social-distancing and stores that were open, like Walmart, only allowed a limited number of cuntomers into the store at one time and customers were told to only go down isles in a certain direction. Facial masks were mandated but there were many who refused to wear them.

We quickly learned that the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions were more likely to die from the illness. By November, there were 57 million cases worldwide with 1.3 million deaths while in the US there were 12 million cases and about 260,000 deaths. The countries with the largest number of cases were as follows: (1) United States, (2) Brazil, (3) India, (4) Mexico, (5) United Kingdom, (6) Italy, (7) France, (8) Iran, (9) Spain and (10) Russia.

We were not able to have our children or grandchildren come into our home, but by April they had come to visit us outside - at a large distance in the yard. It wasn't until mid summer that we finally opened our doors for the kids and grandkids - with social distancing and masks.

Government officals and the news media encouraged families not to get together for Thanksgiving or Christmas due to the possibilities of spreading the disease. Carolyn & I, however, decided that there was no "quality of life" without being able to have family over so we opted to host our annual Thankgiving and Christmas celebrations

All of that to say that we did do our annual family photos after lunch on Thanksgiving Day.

No photos from 2020 would be complete withour our masks
