James William Daniel moved his family
from Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee to Raleigh, Wake
County, North Carolina around 1931. James Frances and Barbara

1947 NATIONAL HONORS
SOCIETY |

THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is composed of Juniors and
Seniors who have excelled in the four standards of
Character, Leadership, Service and Scholarship. They are
selected by the votes of both the students and the
faculty members.
During the fall the members assisted in office work and
conducted a study hall before school. Giving recognition
to the two ninth and tenth grade home rooms having the
highest scholastic records for the first six weeks'
period was the spring project of the Society.
At the fall tapping ceremony, five Juniors and four
Seniors were taken into the Society. At the spring
ceremony, three Juniors and four Seniors were tapped.
The officers for the first term were: Jimmy Briggs -
President; Jimmy Nicholson - Vice-President; Barbara
Daniel - Secretary; and Alvin Jenkins - Treasurer.
The members of the society are as follows, JUNIORS:
Helen Joyce Bell, Jimmy Briggs, Clay Crisp, Eunice
Floyd, Alvin Jenkins, Dick Jenrette, Calvin Koonce,
Charles McDonald, Jimmy Nicholson, Barbara Schreffler,
Tom Smiley, Margaret Story, Martha Strough, Bobby Walker
and Dot Woodward; SENIORS: Charles Barham, Sue Coltrane,
Barbara Daniel, Nancy Fairley, Barbara Jobe, Gordon
Middleton, Robin Scroggs and Nell Sims. Mrs. W.J. Hosley
is the adviser of the chapter. |

THE NATIONAL
HONOR SOCIETY consists of the Juniors and Seniors who
excel in the four standards of Character, Leadership,
Service and Scholarship. The members are selected by the
votes of a committe composed of faculty members and
members of the Honor Society after the vote by the
student body and faculty.
This year the Society had two main projects. The
members took turns in helpin before school as office
assistants. When needed, they were available to take
charge in the absence of a faculty member. Other
activities were a tea for the eighth graders who had
high scholastic averages, and a contest among 9th and
10th grade homerooms in scholarship.
At the fall tapping ceremony, 3 Seniors and 6 Juniors
were taken in; spring term, 3 Seniors and 4 Juniors.
The officers for the fall term were: Red Barhan -
President; Sue Coltrane - Vice-Presicent; Barbara Jobe -
Secretary; and Barbara Daniel - Treasurer.
The Senior members are Charles Barham, Sue Coltrane,
Nancy Fairley, Barbara Jobe, Gordon Middleton, Jane
Phinney, Susan Pickens, Robin Scoggs, Mary Jo Shaw, Nell
Sims, Robert Midgette, Ernestine Nance, Joyce Sapp and
the Juniors: Catherine Bikle, Mary Scott Daniel, Jean
Denny, Nancy Hobbs, Virginia Mowery, Dick Sommers, Myron
Banks, Dora Ann Cooper, Eloise Fretz, Sammy Jean
Johnson. Mrs. Tora Ladu is the adviser of the chapter. |

Leading events for the Senior Y-Teens
this year were the State Y-Teens Convention for which
many of the girls were hostesses, the City-Wide
Recognition Service, the Christmas tea, and the annual
spring card dance. |

After she graduated from Broughton High School, Barbara enrolled
in St. Mary's Junior College and eventually became a student at
the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. |

Barbara met and fell in love with Thomas Bryan Smiley, Jr. They
both had been students at Broughton High School in Raleigh, Wake
County, North Carolina and also the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, NC. |
