Charles Hameister

Born: 01 Jul 1859, GERMANY (Previously PRUSSIA)
Died: 10 Feb 1931, USA

Charles "Carl" Hameister (also spelled Haymeister and Hemeister) was born 01 July 1859 in Germany.  At this time there is no indication who Charles's parents were, although according to the 1900 and 1910 Macomb County, Michigan, Census, we know that they were both born in Prussia in lands that eventually became Germany.

CHECK AFTER JOANN DATA

Naturalization Records indicate that Charles' USA Naturalization date was 1880 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

The 1880 Census for Cuyahoga County, Ohio, show Charles Hameister living in the town of Cleveland with Henry and Mary Klaustermeyer.  The Klaustermeyers owned a grocery store in Cleveland and a single 21-year-old Charles (just off of the ship) was working as a "Grocery Clerk".

Germany was part of the Kingdom of Prussia in the 1800s

The 1880 Census shows that Charles was born in Prussia, instead of Germany.  Why? To understand Charles' birth location, it is necessary to understand the relationship of Prussia and Germany.  The Kingdom of Prussia was a German kingdom that existed between 1701 and 1918 and included parts of present-day Germany, Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium and the Czech Republic. Prussia is considered the legal predecessor and a direct ancestor of the current German state.

Charles Hameister married Johanna "Anna" Rewoldt about 1884.  Anna, as she was called by family and friends, was born 31 Oct 1858 and died 02 Mar 1914.  Anna was the daughter of William Rewoldt and Wilhelmina Evert from Germany.

The 1900 Census shows Charles and Anna Hameister (spelled Haymeister) living in the Ray Township of Macomb County, Michigan.  Charles and Anna had two children: Powell (actually Paul, a son aged 14) and Clara (a daughter aged 4).  It's more than likely that the Census taker had difficulty with their heavy German accent at the time of the 1900 Census - thus Paul was "Powell". From the Census we learn that Charles was born in Jul 1859 in Germany and that Anna was born in Oct 1858 in Germany.  Both of their parents were also born in Germany.

The Census reveals that Charles and Anna had been married for 16 years, indicating a marriage date of 1884.  The 1910 Census indicates that this was the first marriage for both of them.  It further shows that Anna had given birth to 4 children and the Census shows that all four were still living.  For some reason, two of the other children (who would have been less than 16 years old - the number of years of their marriage) were not living with Charles and Anna.  There is no indication who they were or where they were living.

The Census also incorrectly states that Charles and Anna became Naturalized Citizens in 1883, when it was actually 1880.  It is also important to note that Charles and Anna were both born in Germany, as were their parents.

CHECK AFTER JOANN DATA

The 1930 Census shows Charles Hameister, age 70, living in Rochester, Oakland County, Michigan, with Frederick and Carolina M. Teller and Frederick's son, John.  The Census states that Charles is Frederick's "Father-in-Law", indicating that Carolina had to be Charles' daughter, but since her age is 51, this is before Charles and Anna's marriage.
