Abraham/Abram Gardner was born 12 Nov 1810 in Suffolk, ENGLAND.
 
 
Abraham married Lydia Butters on 28 Sep 1833.  Lydia was born 06 Jun 1812 in Vermont, USA, to Samuel Butters III (1800-1886) and Lydia Carter.  Abraham and Lydia had at least nine children.

The 1840 Census shows Abraham and Lydia living in Oakland County, Michigan.  His age is shown as "30 and Under 40" and Lydia is shown as "20 and Under 30).  The couple have two children under five years of age (Elijah and Lorenzo).

The 1850 Census shows that Abraham and Lydia are still living in Orion, Oakland County, Michigan.  Abraham is 39 and Lydia is 38.  He is a farmer and has acumulated $200 worth of Real Estate.  The Census shows that Abraham was born in England and that Lydia was born in Vermont, USA.  The couple have seven children in 1850: Elijah (age 14, born in NY), Lorenzo (age 12, born in NY), Sarah (age 9, born in Michigan), Julia (age 7, born in Michigan), Lafayette (age 5, born in Michigan), Amos (age 3, born in Michigan) and George (age 1, born in Michigan).

This 1850 Agricultural Census for Abraham Gardner gives more data concerning his farm.  He has 14 acres of Improved Land (land that has been cleared and is being used as fields or buildings) and 36 acres of Unimproved Land (land that is covered with trees or dense woods).  His livestock includes 3 milk cows, 2 working oxen (probably used for plowing fields), 20 sheep, 3 swine/hogs and is valued at $133.  Produce on the farm includes 5 bushels of wheat and 20 bushels of Indian corn.

Thus far I've been unable to find the 1860 Census for Abraham Gardner.
 
 
The 1870 Census shows Abraham & Lydia Gardner living in the Town of Orion, Oakland County, Michigan.  Abraham is 59 and Lydia is 58.  Abraham is a farmer and his Real Estate is valued at $3000 while his Personal Estate is valued at $800.  The Census shows that Abraham was born in England.  There were two children living with Abraham & Lydia: John (age 18) and Lester Martin (age 15)

The 1870 Agricultural Census shows that Abraham's farm has really grown.  He now has 100 acres of land - with 60 being Improved and 40 Unimproved.  His farm is now worth $3000 and his farm implements and machinery are valued at $100.  In 1870 Abraham's livestock includes 3 horses, 2 milk cows, 2 other cattle, 18 sheep and 4 swine/hogs, with his livestock being valued at $300.  Stored produce on the farm has also increased, with 80 bushels of wheat, 600 bushels of Indian corn, 30 bushels of oats, 40 bushels of barley and 80 bushels of buckwheat.  Multicolored Indian corn has a very low water content and is more resistant to freezing than other vegetables.  It is also the type of corn preferred for making hominy, a staple food in early America.

By 1880 Abraham and Lydia have moved to Lapeer County, Michigan.  Their ages are 69 and 69.  This Census does show that both of Abraham's parents were born in England and that both of Lydia's parents were born in Vermont.  There are no children living with Abraham and Lydia in 1880.

Lydia died 07 Jan 1882 in Oakland, Michigan.  Abraham died 24 Sep 1888 in Oakland, Michigan.  They were buried in the Square Lake Cemetery of Lake Orion, Oakland County, Michigan.

GEORGE GARDNER PASSES AWAY

 

     George Gardner died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mamie Wolfe of Flint (Michigan), Tuesday, where he had been visiting.  Mr. Gardner was 88 years of age.
     The funeral service was held in the Bay Port Methodist Church yesterday. Burial was in the Old Bay Port Cemetery.
     Mr. Gardner was for many years a resident of McKinley Township and had lived in Bay Port for over twenty years.
