Alfred Earnshaw

Born: 01 Sep 1871, Salford, Lancashire, ENGLAND
Died:  UNKNOWN

Alfred "Fred" Earnshaw was the fifth child born to William Earnshaw (b.1836) and Ellen Helen Bruning (b.1839).  Alfred/Fred was born 01 Sep 1871 in Salford, Lancashire, ENGLAND.

The following baptism record show that Alfred Earnshaw was born 1st Sep 1871 and that he was baptized on the 19th August 1876 in the Cathedral and Parish Church of Manchester, in the County of Lancaster, ENGLAND.  The Baptismal Record clearly states that his parents were William and Ellen Earnshaw and that William was a "Mechanic".

Alfred's sister Emily Earnshaw was born 23rd May 1876 and was baptized at the same time as Alfred on 19 Aug 1876.

The 1881 Census shows William Earnshaw and his wife Ellen living at Broughton in Salford, Lancashire County, ENGLAND.  William is working a "machine mechanic" or "fitter".  Young Alfred was 9 years old at the time of the Census and was listed as a "Scholar" (or attending school).

Fred Earnshaw (shown at top of the following list) departed from Liverpool, England, on 7 Feb 1894 aboard the ship Majestic headed for New York.  Fred is listed as being 25 years old and his occupation is listed as "bartender".

The Majestic was a steamship built in 1890 for and operated by the White Star Line. Her story is tightly intertwined with that of the Titanic (which was ordered to replace Majestic, then one of the oldest ships in the White Star Line). After Titanic struck an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage, Majestic was called back from reserve to continue trans-Atlantic operations.

Alfred married Harriet "Hallie" A. Davis prior to 1897.  Harriet/Hallie was born Jul 1872 in Ohio and was the daughter of Jim S. Davis and Mary E. Davis.  Their marriage produced three children.

Harriett "Hallie" Davis when she was a little girl - from the original tintype

The 1900 Census shows Fred and Harriett Earnshaw living in District 8, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.  Even though this 1900 Census shows that Alfred/Fred was born in Michigan, the 1881 Census shows that he was born in Salford, Lancaster County, ENGLAND.  This 1900 Census does show that both of Fred's parents were born in England.  Fred is working as a "Street Inspector" and Harriet is working as a "Stenographer" (a person employed chiefly to take and transcribe dictation).

Fred and Harriet's two children are listed on this Census, also. Rees is 3 years old and Helen is 10 months old (although she was probably closer to 2 years old).

This Census also shows that Fred's sister, Helen Voute, and mother, Helen Bruning, are living with he and Harriett.  There are obviously some errors when looking at the data about these two women.  Helen Bruning is listed as being 50 years old and born in 1880.  Had she been born in 1880, she would only have been 20 years old - and not nearly old enough to be Alfred's mother since Alfred was 28.  The Census also says she's only been married for 17 years - not nearly old enough to be Alfred and Helen Voute's mother.  Fred shows that his mother was born in England, but mother Helen's birth information says that it is "Unknown" where she was born because she was "adopt"-ed.  Also, if both mother Helen and sister Helen are married, where are their husbands?  The Census says that Helen had one child that was still living and that mother Helen Bruning had three children that were still living.

Alfred/Fred and Hallie worked as dancers/performers on Vaudeville.

Hallie died and Fred and little Fred continued in Vaudeville while Helen and grampa Davis went to live with the Spitzer.

This 13 Nov 1915 ad from THE BILLBOARD, shows that Fred is advertising for a job as a "Comedian or Good Straight Man".  He was living in (or at least working in) Coldwater, Michigan at the time.
