The 1800 Census shows Dempsey Dodd living in Johnston County,
NC, but the numbers and ages keep us wondering who the other
people in the Dempsey Dodd family were. There is one male
between the ages of 25 to 44 and know that has to be Dempsey
(who was 35 years old). There are two females between the
ages of 16 to 25 and since Dempsey married Phereby in 1796 we
know one of them would have to be her (she would have been about
25 years old). According to the records I've seen, Dempsey
and Phereby didn't have their first child until 1800 when David
and Willie were born. Dempsey did,, however, have two
younger sisters. Susan "Sukie" would have been 25 years
old and could account for the second female in the house between
the ages of 16 to 16. His sister Dicey would have been 14
years old and could account for the female on the Census aged 10
to 15. There is no indication of who the younger children
(two girls under ten, a boy under 10 and a boy between 10-15)
were. Is it possible that Dempsey was married before he
married Phereby in 1796 and had younger chiildren by that
marriage? |

The Census does show that the family had one slave. |

The 1810 Census shows Dempsey living in Johnston County, NC,
next door to either his father or brother (both named William). |
|
Dempsey's age would be 45 and thus accounting for the male on
the Census "45 & up". Phereby's age would have been about
36 and thus accounting for one of the females "16 - 44".
According to records that have been found, Dempsey and Phereby
had three children before 1810 (David about age 10, Willie age 9
and Theophilus age 4). There is no indication who the
other males and females in the family were. ... children
of Dempsey by a previous marriage? ... siblings? ...
nieces and nephews? |

On 28 January 1820, Reuben Benson Dodd
wrote his will and it was probated in the next term of Court
(Feb 1820). He left all of his land, including "the plantation
where I now live"; livestock; negro girl, Winny;
household furniture; land where Charles Parish now lives, and
crops "to wife, Tabitha". Five shillings each was left to the
following: Jenny Swinny/Sweaney (his sister), William Dodd (his
brother), Bennett Dodd (his brother), Dempsy Dodd (his brother),
John Dodd, Elizabeth Dodd, Dice Carter (his sister) and Lucy
Windham. Executrix was his wife, Tabitha, and witnessed
by John Vinson and John B. Smith. |

The 1830 Census shows Dempsey & Phereby living in Johnston
County, NC, near his sons Willie (and wife Gillie Smith) and
David. |
|
There were eight people living in the Dempsey Dodd home.
There were only two males besides Dempsey "50 - 60" - John
(about age 18, "10 - 15") and Theophilus (age 24, "20 - 30").
We know that Willie and David were out on thier own - was
Matthew married, too? The female listed as "60 - 70" is
more thank likely Phereby - who would have actually been about
age 56. Since we don't know here exact birth date she
could have been older. The other females listed on the
Census were Nancy age 12 ("10 - 15"), Livia age 15 ("15 - 12")
and Phereby age 18 ("15 - 20"), but who was the female aged "20
- 30"? |

The additional information on the 1850 Census takes away most of
the guess work. Dempsey (age 85) and Phereby (age 83) were
living on the farm in Johnston County, NC, with their daughter
Phereby (age 38). Dempsey's Real Estate value was $350 and
neither he nor Phereby could read or write. |
|
Their daughter Nancy Thompson Dodd had married Dewitt Clinton
Wllons (1819 - 1860) around 1843. The Census gives the
names of their children: Martha A. (age 7), James H. (age 6),
Sarah Jane (age 4) and Cornelia K. (age 1). Their son
William J. Wellons wasn't born until 22 Jul 1857. |
