Charles married
Beulah Vernesta "Nessie" Johnson on 01 May 1902 in Iredell
County, NC. He was 35 and she was 16. Nessie was born 12 Apr
1889 and was the daughter of
John Henry Pinkney Johnson (b. 1865) and
Nancy Caroline Lasley/Leslie. |

Marriage License for Charlie
Johnson and Nessie Johnson |
 |
|
|
One might speculate that with the age
difference "perhaps" she was pregnant at the time of their
marriage. Their daughter,
Geneva Mae Johnson, however, was born 21 Feb 1903 in Iredell
County, NC - 10 months later. |
|
The romance didn’t last, however. One
day, in 1904, Charlie just “left” and never returned. According to
Mary Helen Goble Sigmon (daughter of
Nessie Johnson), “the
family always believed that he had left town with another woman
and was eventually killed.” According to Brenda
Isenhour Schronce, granddaughter of
Nessie Johnson (who lived with her grandmother
Nessie for 14 years), shared that additional family
history suggested that perhaps he was a "Pinkerton Detective".
If so, it doesn't explain why he never returned for Nessie. |

The Pinkerton
Detective Agency is a private detective agency that
was established in the United States by Allan Pinkerton
in 1850 and is currently a subsidiary of Securitas AB.
Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a
plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who
later hired Pinkerton agents for his personal security
during the Civil War. Pinkerton's agents performed
services ranging from security guarding to private
military contracting work. Pinkerton was the largest
private law enforcement organization in the world at the
height of its power |
