Eber Hart Sr.

Born: 16 Nov 1756, Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island
Died: 21 Jul 1842, Onondaga, Onondaga County, New York

Eber Hart, Sr., was born 16 Nov 1756 in Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island to William Hart (1732 - 1790) and Mary Stanley Mitchell (1740 - 1822).

Eber married Alice Devol on 20 Dec 1778 in Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island.  They were both 21 at the time of their marriage.  Alice was born 06 Jun 1756 in Westport, Massachusetts to William Devol and Abigail Hicks.

On page 30 of Rhode Island Vital Records, the marriage of Eber Hart and Alice Devol/Deval is liste as having occurred on 20 Dec 1778 (instead of 24 Dec 1777 as some genealogists have listed).  This record shows that Eber was the son of William Hart of Tiverton and that Alice was the daughter of William Devol (deceased) of Dartmouth.  The couple was married by Walter Cook, Justice of the Peace.

Vital Marriage Record of Rhode Island, page 30

By 1790 Eber and Alice had moved to Massachusett.  The following Westport, Massachusetts, Vital Records report gives their birth dates, marriage date, as well as the names and birth dates of four of their children.

Eber and Alice's marriage produced at least five children: Abigail, Elizabeth, Holder, Eber Jr. and Pardon.

The 1790 Census shows Eber Hart Sr. living in Westbort, Bristol County, Massachusetts with his family.  Even though other family members aren't mentioned by name, it's pretty easy to figure out who was living in the house in 1790.  Eber Sr. is the "Free White Male of 16 years old and upward.  Sons Holder and Eber Jr. are the "Free White Males Under 16 years".  The 3 "Free White Females are wife Alice and daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth.  There is currently no indication who neighbor George Hart was.  He was obviously a relative, but was he a brother, a cousin, or who?

The 1810 Census shows Eber Sr. living in Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, with his family.  Eber Sr. would have been the "Free Male 45 and Older", Eber Jr. would have been the "Free Male 16 to 25" and Pardon would have been the "Free Male 10 to 15". At this time I'm not sure how Alice and daughters Elizabeth and Abigal fit the ages that are listed for the females.

The 1840 Census appears to be the Census for Eber Hart, Jr.  Eber Jr. (age 53) would have been the Male between the ages of 50 to 59.  More than likely, the male aged 80 to 89 would have been his father Eber Hart, Sr. (who would have been 84) years old and the female aged 80 to 89 would have been his wife, Alice Devol Hart.
