David Sherrill

Born: 02 Oct 1764, Rowan County, NC
Died:  17 Jul 1827, Iredell Co, NC

David Sherrill was born 02 Oct 1764 in the Sherrills Ford area of what would have been Rowan County, North Carolina, at the time. He was the son of Uriah Sherrill (1728-1779) and Judith Lewis (1735-1815).

David (age 26) married Rachel Hamilton in 1790 (when she was 16). Rachel was born in 1774 and was the daughter of Archibald Hamilton (1743-1820) and Mary Polly Hawkins (1745-1834). David and Rachel's marriage produced at least four children.

The 1810 Census shows David Sherrill living near his brothers Enos Sherrill and Benjamin Sherrill. David and Rachel's third son, Enos, was named after David's brother, and appears to have been born 1799 -1801. No additional information can be found on baby Enos Sherrill and it appears that he died before the data was collected for the 1820 Census. All four of David and Rachel's children show up on the 1810 Census but there is no indication who the "16-25" year old female was.

All three of the Sherrill brother owned slaves. David owned 7 slaves, his brother Enos owned 6 and brother Benjamin owned 3.

Letter Excerpt Dated 15 Jan 1858

From  Rachel's nephew, Drury Hamilton, to Rachel's brother, Ninian Beall Hamilton

But while I am writing of the good health of the friends, I have also the painful duty to perform of writing of the death of your beloved sister, old Aunt Rachel Sherrill. She departed this life the first day of this year. She was as well as usual for some time previous and on the night before she died seemed more lively than common, and on New Year's morning got up and eat a hearty breakfast and started into the other house and got as far as the door and dropped down and was carried into the house and put to bed. She told them that she was going to die and in one hour she was speechless and at 10 o'clock at night died. She made a profession of religion and was to be baptized at an association that was held at my father's in October last, but was somewhat unwell at the time and it was put off, so she died without the rite being performed.

Son Alfred Sherrill outlived his parents and all of his siblings. Alfred died 1870 in Alexander County, NC.
