James Q. Lasley/Leslie

Born: About 1807, Iredell County, NC
Died:  Before 1880, Iredell County, NC

James Q. Lasley (also spelled Leslie and Lesley) was born about 1807 and seems to have been the son of James Lesley/Leslie, Sr.

The 1810 Census shows James Leslie, Sr. living in Iredell County, NC.  James Q. Leslie's age would have been about 3 years old - placing him in the category of "Males < 10".

In 1820, James Q. Leslie would have been about 13 years old.  The 1820 Census shows James Leslie, Sr.  living in Iredell County with his family.

The 1830 Iredell County shows James Leslie living beside of Robert Lesley.  More than likely this James Lesley was the father of James Q. Leslie, and his age would have been 50 - 60 years old.  James Q. Lesley would have been about 23 years old and would have fallen in the age category "20 - 29".

It appears that Robert Lesley may have been a brother of James Q. Lesley - and son of James Lesley, Sr..  The 1850 Census shows Robert's age as 54 indicating that he would have been born about 1796.  This would put him in the correct category, age 30 - 39, for the 1830 Census.

James Q. Leslie married "Unknown" and that marriage produced at least five children.

The 1840 Census shows James Q. Leslie living in Iredell County, NC, with his family.  His age would have been between 30 - 40 years old (around 33) and his wife would have been between 20 - 30 years old.

The Census shows them with three children: a son who was less than 5 years old but he could have been 6 to 9 (more than likely William P.), a daughter aged 5 to 9 (more than likely Amanda who would have been about 5), and another daughter who was less than 5 years olf (more than likely Margaret Elizabeth who would have been age 2).

The 1850 Iredell County, NC, Census, shows James Leslie, age 35 (although he was more than likely around 43), living next door to Robt. (Robert) Lasley, age 54.

To begin with, James' age must be incorrect,  Both the 1860 and 1870 Census indicate that he was born in 1807.  His correct age would have been around 43 instead of 35 in 1850.

With a 10-year difference in time, the 1850 Census shows additional children for James Q. Leslie as Wm. P. (William P.), age 20, and Amanda, age 14, are not shown on the 1860 Census, but Elizabeth, age 12, (shown on the 1860 Census as Margaret E., age 23), James, age 9, (shown on the 1860 Census as James O., age 19), and Jane L., age 7, (shown on the 1860 Census as Martha J., age 17), were.  With the names and ages being so similar, there is little doubt that this is the same family.

If James Q. Leslie (Lasley) was indeed 43 years old in 1850, then his neighbor Robert, age 54, was too young to be his father, and must have been an older brother.

After the death of his first wife, James Q. /LasleyLeslie married Sarah (Sallie) Caroline Fink on 05 Oct 1852 in Iredell County, NC.  Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Fink.  This was his second marriage.  He was 25 years older than Sarah.

The following marriage record shows the marriage date for James Q. Leslie and Sarah Caroline/Catherine Fink - as well as the Justice of the Peace, W. B. Grant. This record also lists the marriage of James Osborne Leslie and Sophia Lillian Smithdeal Plyler on 20 Nov 1866.

According to the 1860 Iredell County Census, James & Sarah were living in Statesville, NC, and the family name was spelled "Leslie".  His three children from a previous marriage (Margaret, James & Martha) were living with them, as well as their daughter Nancy Caroline.

By 1870, James's three older children had left home.  The 1870 Census had his name spelled as "Lasley" instead of "Leslie.  James and Sarah had three more children in addition to Nancy Caroline.  They were Lillia, Laura and SophiaNancy was 11 years old.

The Census also shows them living near Sarah's parents, Daniel & Elizabeth Fink, and their family.

James Q. Lasley/Leslie and Sarah "Sallie" C. Fink had at least four children. The Death Certificates for Lillie and Laura say they were born in Alexander County but the Leslie family was living in Iredell County from at least 1810 to 1870. So, I'm not really sure which would be correct.

James Q. Lasley/Leslie died prior to 1880.  The 1880 Iredell County Census shows his wife Sarah C. Lasley living with her parents.  She is 47 years old and listed as a widow.  There is no explanation as to where the younger children, Laura (age about 15) & Sophia (age about 11) were.
