John Lanier, Jr.

Born: 16 Oct 1655, London, ENGLAND
Died:  05 Jan 1719, Prince George Co, VA

John Lanier, Jr. (or John II) was born 16 Oct 1655 in England.  He was the son of John Lanier, Sr. and Lucreece (Unknown).

John Jr. and his parents immigrated from England in 1657 when he was still a baby. Records show that Howell Price (Colonial Abstracts, Vol II, p33) was responsible for bringing the Laniers to the new world - where they settled in Charles City, VA.

In 1676 John Lanier Sr. and John Woodlief were sent to speak the the Governor William Berkeley about receiving help in defense of Indian raids.  Governor Berkeley refused their request and claimed that western Virginians killed both friendly and hostile Indians, precipitating the Indian attacks.

The colonists asked Nathaniel Bacon (the Governor's nephew) to lead an attack on the Indians.  Governor Berkeley called Bacon a "rebel".  Bacon and his followers (including John Lanier Jr.) returned and burned Jamestown, VA.  Bacon's Rebellion (as it was called) led to the removal of Governor Berkeley and to colonial reforms.

John Jr. was first married to Katherine Ellinor Sampson about 1677.
