Edward Hocutt

Born: Abt. 1711
Died: Abt. 1750

Few details are know about Edward Hocutt but he appears to be the progenitor of the NC Hocutt family.

The earliest information about the Hocutt Family comes from Colonial Records.  Four references have been found concerning William and Edward Hocot (note the difference in spelling).  The earliest record shows that William Hocot was a juryman in Chowan Precinct, NC, in 1723.  Then in the same records, the name Edward Hocot appears in connection with "Quit Rents to His Majesty for Albemarle County, from September 29, 1729 to March 1732".  In a further statement it is found that Edward Hocut (spelling) was a member of Captain James Wooten's Muster List and the name William Hocut appears again in the records of the period when Dobbs was Governor, about 1754 or later.  From Paschal's HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA BAPTISTS, page 241, we learn that Dobbs arrived in New Bern and entered upon his administration on October 31, 1754.  From these four references to these two men, it would seem likely that they were brothers who had come to this country together.  If they were not brothers, very likely they were close kin.

A brief statement from the Will of Edward Hocut in Beaufort County, NC, dated January 1749/50, which has a word about the March Court in 1750, reveals that he had three sons, namely: William, Nathaniel, Edward.  His wife's name was Martha and she was the Ececutor of the Will, along with Nathan Archebald.  Edward and Martha had two daughters whose names were not given.  William was the oldest son.  The Will indicates that he had a rather large plantation.  He gave Nathaniel five shillings to purchase a Bible.  The Will mentions property in Bathtown.  In another place with dates that correspond to the date of his Will, we found that Edward Hocut listed 370 acres of land at 6F, 9S, 0D.  From a study of the dates, the location and the names of the children, we have every reason to believe that Edward Hocut who wrote this Will to be the same Edward Hocut first mentioned above.

We have been able to trace the records of William and Edward, two of the sons mentioned, but have found no further word about Nathaniel.
