During the Civil War, Henry Gaston Dodd enlisted in the
Confederate Army on 17 Jun 1861 and served with Company K, 24th
Infantry Regiment NC. He enlisted as a Corporal in
Franklin County, NC. He was 24 years old. It is not
known if he served as a physician or whether he became a doctor
after the war. |
|
Both his brothers, Ruffin Thomas Dodd and Ransom T. Dodd also
served with the Confederate States of America, enlisting with
Company A, 47th Infantry Regiment NC. Ransom was wounded
in the first day's battle at Gettysburg and Ruffin was a
survivor of Pickets Charge. |
|
|
|
At the end of the war, Henry Gaston returned to Franklin County
and by 1870 had a medical practice in Cypress Creek. |
|
|
|
Henry Gaston Dodd married Emily "Emma" Creech, daughter of
Stanford Creech and Martha Ellen Horne of Clayton, around 1874.
He was about 37 years old and she was 18. Following the
marriage, he moved his medical practice to Clayton, NC. |
|
Gaston and Emma had two children. |

His bride of just a few years died sometime between 1876 - 1880,
either during childbirth or soon thereafter. She was about
20 - 24 years old. Regrettably, her gravestone in Horne
Cemetery has sunk and most of the information on it is
illegible. It is known, however, that Gaston was a widower
by 1880. |
|
Their second born son, DaCosta, died in 1880 and is also buried
in Horne Cemetery. |
|
|
Dr. Henry Gaston Dodd survived his wife by at least 12 years.
He died 06 Sep 1892 at the age of 55. |
|
His only surviving son, Roscoe, graduated Wake Forest University
and was last known to be living in Morrisville, Wake County, NC
(ca. 1920) where he was managing the retail mercantile concerns
of his uncle, Samuel Ruffin Horne. Roscoe
married Fannie Powers on Aug 1897 and was father of one known
child: Benjamin R. Dodd (b. 1899). |
