The hijackers intentionally piloted two of those jets (American Airlines
Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175) into the
Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New
York City; both towers collapsed within two hours.
The hijackers also crashed the third jet (American
Airlines Flight 77) into the Pentagon in Arlington,
Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked
jet (United Airlines Flight 93) into a target in
Washington, D.C.; however, the plane crashed into a
field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its
passengers attempted to take control of the jet from
the hijackers.

The War on Terror (also known as the Global War on Terror or the War on Terrorism) is a term commonly applied to an international military campaign led by the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1984 the Ronald Reagan Administration used the term "war against terrorism" as part of an effort to pass legislation that was designed to freeze assets of terrorist groups. 9/11
On Tuesday morning, 11 Sep 2001, nineteen terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets in a coordinated strike on New York City and Washington, D.C. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes, none of whom survived. War on Terror
The phrase "War on Terror" was first used by US President George W. Bush to denote a global military, political, and ideological struggle against organizations designated as terrorist - as well as regimes that were accused of having a connection to them or providing them with support - thus posing a threat to the US and its allies. It was typically used concerning militant Islamists and al-Qaeda. In February 1998, Osama bin Laden (as the head of al_Qaeda) signed a fatwa (a ruling concerning Islamic law), declaring war on the West and Israel. In May of the same year al-Qaeda released a video declaring war on the US and the West. Following bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, US President Bill Clinton launched Operation Infinite Reach, a bombing campaign in Sudan and Afghanistan .

"Operation Enduring Freedom" - AFGHANISTAN
Operation Enduring Freedom was the official name used by the George W. Bush administration for the War in Afghanistan - under the umbrella of the Global War on Terror. These global operations are intended to seek out and destroy any al-Qaeda fighters or affiliates. On 20 September 2001, in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks, George W. Bush delivered an ultimatum to the Taliban government of Afghanistan to turn over Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda leaders operating in the country or face attack. In October 2001, US forces (with UK and coalition allies) invaded Afghanistan to oust the Taliban regime. "Operation Iraqi Freedom" - IRAQ
Iraq had been listed as a State sponsor of terrorism by he U.S. since 1990, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Hussein's regime proved a continuing problem for the UN and Iraq's neighbors due to its use of chemical weapons against Iranians and Kurds. U.S. president Bill Clinton had predicted that Hussein would develop weapons of mass destruction. In October 2002, the United States Congress authorized President George W. Bush to use force if necessary to disarm Iraq in order to "prosecute the war on terrorism". The Iraq War began in March 2003 with an air campaign, which was immediately followed by a U.S. led ground invasion. Baghdad, Iraq’s capital city, fell in April 2003 and Saddam Hussein’s government quickly dissolved. On 1 May 2003, President Bush announced that major combat operations in Iraq had ended. However, an insurgency arose against the U.S. led coalition and the newly developing Iraqi military and post-Saddam government. The insurgency, which included al-Qaeda affiliated groups, led to far more coalition casualties than the invasion. Other elements of the insurgency were led by fugitive members of President Hussein's Ba'ath regime. Many insurgency leaders were Islamists and claimed to be fighting a religious war to reestablish the Islamic Caliphate of centuries past. Iraq’s former president, Saddam Hussein, was captured by U.S. forces in December 2003. He had been married for 6 months at the time of his enlistment to Penny Hedrick. Like his father before him, Jerry made the military his career - serving for 33 years, 7 months, 7b days. Jerry's service took him all over the world. He served for 6 years in Germany, where his oldest son was born. He served 6 years in the Airborn Infantry - that was his job in the "regular" army. He served in a Persian Missle Unit, where his job was to guard the missles. From 2003 - 2004, he served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq. His unit trained Arab soldiers to take over the police force when the Americans left. His Unit, from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, was a unite of Drill Sergeants. From 2008 to 2010 he served in Fort Hunter Ligett, California, where his unit trained National Guard soldiers 90 days before they were to be deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq.
