Bobby Lee Taylor

Born: 27 April 1934, Catawba County, NC
Died: 17 March 2015, Catawba County, NC

[This TRIBUTE page for Bobby Taylor was created by Curtis D. Loftin as a simple way to say "Thank You" to Bobby & Grace for all they've done for me.  Bobby & Grace took an interest in me when I was a teenage boy at Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba, Catawba County, NC, when Bobby directed the Youth Choir and his wife Grace played the piano.  I don't really know whey they did, but I'm certainly grateful that they did.  A friendship was formed that took me through high school, college, and even into adulthood.  Many weekends I'd come home from college (Appalachian State University in Boone, NC) and after visiting with Dad & Mom, would head over to Bobby & Grace's house where we'd talk, sing and pray till well after midnight.  Bobby was even the minister when I married Carolyn Weeks in 1975.  After the wedding rehearsal, the wedding party went down to Bobby & Grace's house in Sherrills Ford, NC, for a "Prayer Meeting" - one like I had told all my friends in college about.  I always thought it interesting that Rev. Tommy Taylor had taken my dad (Sam Loftin) under his wing when he Pastored Mathis Chapel - and then Bobby & Grace did the same thing with me.  I'm eternally grateful for the love, guidance & influence and urging me to continually look for more of the LORD.  My adult life would have been a lot different without their direction and encouragement.]

Bobby Lee Taylor was born 27 Apr 1934 in Catawba County, NC, the oldest child of Rev. Thomas D. Taylor and Jean Bagwell.  Bobby was raised in Cleveland County, NC.

As the oldest son of Tommy & Jean, Bobby was always willing to help supervise his younger siblings.  When Bobby's dad, Tommy, felt "the call" to preach and went away to Fruitland Bible College, Bobby quit school to look after his siblings.  Eventually Bobby graduated from Fallston High School.

Bobby had a love for flower gardening from his youth that continued on into his adulthood.

Rev. Tommy Taylor eventually moved back to Catawba County, NC, where he was called to preach at Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba, NC.  It was there that Bobby met and fell in love with Grace Kirksey - the daughter of Vic & Viola Kirksey.  They were married at Mathis Chapel in 1960.

Bobby and Grace had one daughter, Angela.

Bobby & Grace - When he was serving in the US Army

While Bobby was serving in the US Army, it was discovered that he had a brain tumor.  Surgery left him legally blind - with no sight in one eye and only tunnel vision in the other.  Yet in spite of these difficulties, Bobby went on to have a full life.  He even managed to drive a car.

Like his father, Bobby was "called" to the ministry, but unlike Tommy, Bobby never pastored a church.  He did, however, preach at numerous churches.  He and Grace influenced the lives of an ABUNDANCE of people will their willingness to serve the LORD when someone called and had a need.

Everyone at Mathis Chapel "loved" to hear Bobby, Grace and Angela sing.  Angela would sing lead, Grace alto and Bobby tenor.  Their harmonies were beautiful and the Holy Spirit would always move when they were singing.
