Nelson Monroe Sherrill was the fourth child born to N.W. and Caroline S. Sherrill.  Nelson had at least four seven siblings.

On 26 April 1861, Nelson enlisted in the Confederate Army, in the 1st Regiment, Company K, North Carolina Infantry for a period of 6 months.  He finished this term of service on 12 Apr 1861 and reenlisted on 13 Mar 1862 in the NC 23rd.  He was wounded on 06 Jul 1863 in Richmond , VA, and returned to duty on 25 Aug 1863 where he was present through Dec 1864.  Nelson survived the Civil War and married Rebecca E. Burke.

 
 
 

The 1880 Catawba Springs Township Census of Lincoln County, NC, lists the members of Nelson's family.  Nelson is 39 and Rebecca is 38 years old.  They have five children: William, Caroline, Emma, Edgar and Ellen.

By 1900, there had moved to the Caldwell Township of Catawba County.  There were only four living on the family farm - Nelson, Rebecca and their two youngest children, Beveily and Iola.
