Lewis Washington McCorkle was the son of Thomas Jefferson McCorkle (1809 - 1895) and Mary Elizabeth Autrey (1812 - 1903).  Lewis was born 09 Oct 1838 in Colbert County, Alabama. Records seem to indicate that he was the third oldest child
 
Lewis Washington McCorkle Joined the Confederate Army sometime in the year 1861. Private J32, Mississippi Regiment. He was captured at Corinth, Mississippi, and was sent to prison camp at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois (Sept 1862). On 01 Nov 1862 there was a prisoner exchange and after his release Lewis returned home to Spring Valley, McCorkle Gap, in Colbert County, Alabama.
 
 
Five years later, Lewis Washington McCorkle married Frances Jane Claunch about 1867.  Lewis and Frances lived in the Limerock community on the Underwood Road in Colbert County until the late 1880s. The place is now known as the "Homer Harris Place".
 
On 11 Aug 1888, Lewis and Frances McCorkle purchased 78 acres of land from William C. Grissom (and his wife Josephine) and moved to New Bethel Community. Lewis and Frances had at least eleven children.

Members of the Lewis Washington McCorkle and Frances Jane Clouch gathered for a family photograph in 1896. And at 10 a.m. Saturday, 02 Aug, the annual McCorkle family reunion is set at Tuscumbia Spring Park.

Lewis Washington McCorkle and Frances Jane Claunch McCorkle lived in the New Bethel community and were members at the Sandlick Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Crooked Oak Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church. The churches were inactive at times. In their later days they were members of the New Bethel Baptist Church.
 
 
Lewis owned his farm until his death on 23 May 1924 in Colbert County, Alabama. He lived there for 36 years. The farm is still in the ownership of his heirs and the heirs of his descendants (James Malone and Edward Lee Malone), except for the portion occupied by the Hawk Pride Mountain Water Department and Fire Department.

Frances died 04 Jul 1930 in Colbert County, Alabama. Lewis and Frances were buried in the Crooked Oak Cemetery.
