Tommy grew up believing that Grady Thomas Loftin I (1918 - 1977) and Dorothy Ila Perry (1917 - 1977) were his parents, but they were actually his maternal grandparents. Grady and Dorothy had two daughters, Marilyn and Gayle.

Tommy found out years later that Marilyn was in fact his mother (not his sister). His grandfather and grandmother raised him as their own. Tommy married Elizabeth Kay Stanford. Their marriage produced two children. Tommy and Elizabeth eventually divorced.
