Cornelius Loftin (1695 - 1762) was one of seven children born to Leonard Loftin (1670 - 1720) and Elizabeth Parker.  He married Rachel Herring.  Rachel was born Abt. 1698 and died Abt 1750.  Cornelius died 18 or 30 Jun 1762 in Craven County, NC.

 

Cornelius was appointed as Justice of the Peace for the precinct of Craven at a council held at Edenton the 3rd day of April Anno Domini 1733. (Colonial Records, Volume III, page 537)

 

He was a member of a Company of Gentlemen Sojers under a Captain Thomas Graves, whose granddaughter afterward married his nephew.  A list of Foot Company of Soldiers under Captain Graves, by commission bearing date the 6th of January 1751, for the District from the lower side of Sow West Crick to the Town Bounds. To all to whom this presents shall come I Cornelius Loftin of Craven County and province of North Carolina Send Greeting. Know Ye that I the said Cornelius Loftin for the love good will and affection which I have and bear towards my loving children hereafter named Jeremiah, Shadrick, Mary and Shallatta have given and granted and by these present do freely clearly and absolutely give and grant unto my said children before mentioned their heirs and assigns forever all my estate both real and personal as hereafter mentioned and expressed. 

I give and grant unto my loving son Jeremiah the plantation I now live on containing one hundred acres. I also give and grant unto my son, Jeremiah, one negro man named Jack(Zack) and one negro boy named Jings and one Riding horse called Rock with bridle and saddle which said land and Negroes together with horse bridle and saddle I give unto my said Jeremiah his heirs and assigns forever.

I give and grant unto my beloved son, Shadrick, one hundred acres of land joining the land I now live on. I also give & grant unto my son, Shadrick, one negro man named bon and one negro boy named Sam which said land and negroes I give and unto my said son Shadrick him and his heirs forever.

I give and grant unto my beloved Daughter, Mary, one negro boy named Jasper which said negro I give and grant unto my said Daughter, Mary, to her and her heirs forever.

I give and grant unto my beloved Daughter, Shallatta, one negro boy named Empro which said negro boy I give unto my said Daughter Shallatta to her and her heirs forever. I also give and grant unto my son Jeremiah one negro woman named Vinice which said woman I give unto my said son Jeremiah to him his heirs and assigns forever. I also give and grant unto my son Shadrick one negro boy named Gim which said negro boy I give unto my son Shadrick to him his heirs and assigns forever.

I give and grant unto my beloved Daughter Jemimah Russel one negro boy named Simon which said negro boy I give unto my Daughter Jemimah Russel to her and her heirs and assigns forever. To Have and to Hold all that said lands negroes goods and chattels and all other the premises unto the said Jeremiah Shadrack Mary and Shallata Loftin and Jemimah Russel to them and their heirs and assigns forever in manner and form as above Said from henceforth to there own proper use and as there own proper goods forever absolutely without any manner of condition whatsoever.

In witness whereof I the said Cornelius Loftin have here unto set my hand and seal this 8th Day of Feby Anno Dom 1762
