Leander R. Johnson

Born: Abt. 1814
Died:

Leander Johnson was the first child born to Robert Johnson and Mary Wilkinson.  He was born about 1814.

Little is known about the early life of Leander.  The book "From Stirling to Sterling - The Bicentennial History of New Sterling Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church" by Mildred Miller gives additional information about the life of his parents, Robert and Mary Johnson, from church records.  Leander is listed as the first child, but no exact birth date is given.

Leander's siblings were:
Name Birth Date Death Date Spouse
John A. Johnson
Elihue F. Johnson
Louisa Do Johnson
A. Hervy Johnson
Robert W. Johnson 26 May 1825
Pinkney C. Johnson Abt. 1827   Levina C. Sherrill
Malissa Johnson     Hiram Bryant Sherrill
Israel A. Johnson 15 April 1830
Albert N. Johnson Bet. 1834 - 1838
Mary Johnson

Leander's sister, Mary, was not listed in the book "From Stirling to Sterling", but her name was listed on the 1850 Iredell County Census.

Leander Johnson married Mary (Unknown).

In 1850, Leander and Mary were living in Iredell County, NC, according to the Iredell County Census.  They had four children: Martha J (age 7), Sarah A. (age 5),  Henry N. (age 2) and Margaret (age 2/12).    Henry's age is listed as 36 and Mary was 29.  The census also states that Mary could not read or write.

Leander was listed on the 1850 Census directly after his father & mother (Robert & Mary) - indicating that they were near neighbors.  Younger brother Pinkney was living nearby with his wife Levina.

The 1860 Iredell County Census lists the area where Leander and Mary were living as the District South of the Yadkin (River).  Many of the ages are incorrect on this census.  In 1850, Leander's age was listed as 36 - in 1860, he was listed as57 - in 1870, he was again listed as 57.  Children Martha, Sarah and Margaret are again listed - but there is no mention of Henry.  Henry does appear again on the 1870 Census.  It's possible that the Norman who was listed was actually Henry Norman Johnson, because Norman doesn't show up on the 1870 census (although if they're not the same, he could have married and left home.

There is no real estate value listed for Leander, but there is a personal estate value of $50 listed.

There were three children's names listed on the 1860 Census that had not appeared on the 1850 Census: Norman (age 10), Lucinda (age 8) and James (age 4).

The 1870 Iredell County Census shows the area where Leander and Mary were living as Shiloh Township.  Many of his relatives were still living nearby - including Levina Sherrill Johnson, the widow of his brother Pinkney C. Johnson who had died during the Civil War; brother, Robert Johnson; mother Mary and sister Malinda.

Most interesting is the fact that Leander's (listed on the Census as "Lee R. Johnson") occupation was "Physician".

There were three new children's names listed with the family: Stella (age 7), Robert A. (age 2) and Albert W. (age 6).

No additional census records for any of the members of this family have been found beyond 1880 and there is no indication of when Leander died.
