Emery Otis Denniston was the third child born to John Mathew Denniston (1852-1927) and Caroline Elizabeth Hart (1848-1935).  Emery was born 05 Mar 1880 in Franklin, Franklin County Nebraska.
 
 
Before 1880, Emery's paternal grandparents (Samuel & Rosanna Denniston) moved from Michigan to Nebraska.  Two of their sons, John Mathew Denniston and Asel/Asahel Denniston, took their families and moved there, also.
 
The 1880 Census shows these three families living near one another in Franklin County, Nebraska.
 
John Mathew (age 28) & Caroline (age 31) are working on their farm with their two sons, William (age 3), and "Baby", none other than Emery Otis Denniston (age 4 months).

The 1900 Census shows that John Mathew and Caroline Denniston have moved back to Michigan with their family. They were living in the Grant Township of Mecosta County, Michigan.  There were five children living the family: William Mathew (age 22), Emery Otis (age 20), Myrtle Mae (age 18), Lora Viola (age 13) and Alanson Manville (age 9).  The three oldest men in the family were working on the family farm.

By 1910, Emery had left the family home in Michigan and was living in Billings Ward 1, Yellowstone County, Montana, working as a laborer on a farm.  The 1910 Census shows that he was age 30 and single..

Emery married Helen Doris Earnshaw (Spitzer), frequently called Ellen, on 08 May 1917 in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan.  Helen was born 15 Jul 1898 in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio to Alfred Earnshaw and Harriet "Hallie" Davis.  At the time of her marriage, Helen was being raised by Leo P. Spitzer and his wife Mina Weldon Spitzer.  Helen, herself, was going by the name of Helen Spitzer.  Emery was 18 years Helen's senior.

Emery registered for the draft during World War I.  He was 38 at the time of his registration.  The Registration Card says that he is "Short" with "Brown" eyes and "Dark" hair.  He was married to Helen Doris (Earnshaw) Denniston at the time of his registration.

The 1920 Census shows Emery Otis Denniston, and his wife Helen/Ellen Doris Earnshaw, living in the Grant Township of Mecosta County, Michigan, near his parents, John Mathew and Caroline.  Emery is 39 and Helen/Ellen is 21.  They have one child, Reese Mathew Denniston (age 1 year and 8 months).  Emery is working as a farmer.  They own the family home but it is mortgaged.

Emery and Helen filed for divorce on 09 Nov 1926 in Allegan County, Michigan.  He was 46 and she was 27.  The Divorce Record shows that he was the Libellant - the one who was suing for the divorce.  Cause for Divorce was listed as "Extreme Cruelty".  The record shows that the divorce was granted and that alimony was granted to Helen.  Reese was 9 and Paul was 5 at the time of their parent's divorce.

By 1930, Helen/Ellen has married Emery's first cousin Orrin Denniston (son of Elmer Augustus Denniston and grandson of Samuel Denniston, Jr). Census shows that Orin and Helen/Ellen have moved to the Lee Township in Calhoun County, Michigan.  Where Emery was 18 years older than Helen/Ellen, Orrin in slightly younger than Helen/Ellen and this Census lists his age as 29 and Helen/Ellen as 31.  They've been married for 3 years and are raising Emery's two sons, Reese and Paul.
