Charles Manson Lee Beatty was the son of Gilbert Manson Beatty (b. 1828) and his first wife, Adeline Susan Sherrill.  Charles was born 05 May 1863 in Catawba County. 

 
 
The 1870 Catawba County Census shows the Gilbert Manson Beatty family living in the Mt. Creek Township of Catawba County, NC.  Gilbert and his wife Adeline were both 41 years old.  Charles Manson's age is listed as 7 years old.  Other siblings living in the family home at the time were Florence Elizabeth (age 12), Susan Virginia (age 9), Francis Locke (age 5) and Cedona Lovenia (age 3).  Adeline's mother, Susan Linebarger Sherrill, age 79, (widow of Aram Sherrill) was also living with the family - as was "farm laborer" Andrew Perkins, age 50.

Charles Mason's mother, Susan Adeline Sherrill Beatty, died 13 Oct 1878.
 
The 1880 Catawba County Census shows the Gilbert Beatty family still living in the Mountain Creek Township.  Gilbert had married Elizabeth Jane McCall and there six children living in the family home:  Charles Manson (age 17), Francis Locke (age 15), Cedona Lovenia (age 13), Genevieve "Jennie" (age 8), Mary Pruitt (age 6) and Cosby (age 4).  The four oldest children had attended school during the year and also worked on the family farm.

Charles Manson married (1st) Anna Jackson Gabriel on 20 Dec 1882.  Anna was born 21 Aug 1865.  He was 19 years old at the time of their marriage and she was 17.  Their marriage produced at least six children.

The 1900 Catawba County Census shows Charles Manson Beatty and his wife Anna Jackson Gabriel Beatty living in the Sherrills Ford Precinct.  His name his incorrectly been transcribed as "Manoou".  The Census shows that Anna had given birth to five children but only two were still living: Nona Belle (age 10) and Ural Jackson (age 4).  Charles Manson's father and step-mother were also living with him and Anna.

The 1910 Census shows Charles Manson and Anna still living in the Sherrills Ford Precinct of Catawba County with two of their children: Ural Jackson (age 14) and Floy L. (age 8).  Daughter Nona Bell was not living at the family home.  Charles Manson worked as a "Farmer" on the family farm.

Anna died on 08 Jun 1911 at the age of 45.  Charles married (2nd) Fannie Belle Setzer on 25 Jun 1912.  Fannie was born on 26 Sep 1880.  She was the daughter of Quince Augustus Setzer and Catherine Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smyre.  (Her paternal grandparents were Reuben Setzer & Lavina Rhyne.) Their marriage produced two children.

The 1920 Census shows Charles Manson and his second wife, Fannie Belle Setzer Beatty, living in the Mountain Creek Township of Catawba County.  Two children from his previous marriage were still living at the family home: Ural Jackson (age 24) and Floy L. (age 18).  Charles Manson & Fannie had two children from their marriage: Charles (Charlie) Elizabeth (age 5) and Charles Manson Jr. (age 1).  Charles Manson Sr.'s age is listed as 56 and Fannie was 39.

Charles Manson Lee Beatty died 01 Dec 1928 in Catawba County, NC.  Fanny died 27 Feb 1964.  Charles and both of his wives (Anna and Fannie) were buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford, NC - as well as several of his children.
