Elihu Lockman Shelton was the son of Spencer L. Shelton III (1795 - 1889) and Sarah "Sallie" Lockman (1809 - 1885). Lock was born Jan 1855 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

The 1860 Census shows Lock living with his parents, Spencer (age 63) and Sarah (age 53), in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Lock was 9 Years old at the time of the Census and was attending school. His siblings listed on this Census were Susan (age 28), Albert (age 19), Sina (age 17), Adolphus (age 12) and Laura (9 months old). The family received their mail at the Post Office at Dry Pond.

The 1870 Census shows that Lock (listed as "Elihu L.") was 19 years old and still living with his parents in Lincoln County, North Carolina. The Census further shows that Lock had attended school during the year. His father, Spencer, was 70 and his mother, Sarah, was 61. Lock's siblings listed on this Census were Adolphus (age 19 - should have been 22) and Laura (age 10). Lock's paternal grandmother Susan R. Shelton (age 87) was also living with the family.

During the same year, Lock's future wife, Nancy Anna Cranford, was living with her parents Wilson Cranford and Martha in the Sherrills Ford area of Catawba County, North Carolina. Nancy was 11 years old at the time of the 1870 Census. Her siblings were Laura Rossie (age 15), Mary (age 13) and Manley Wilson Jr. (age 9).

Lock got his marriage license on 01 Oct 1874 and married Nancy Anna Cranford on 14 Oct 1874 in Catawba County, NC. Nancy was born 04 Apr 1859. She was 15 years old at the time of her marriage even though she said she was 16. Nancy Anna Cranford was the daughter of Rev. Manley Wilson Cranford Sr. (1821 - 1889) and Mary Martha Lomax (1829 - 1910). The couple married at the Cranford home. Even though Nancy Anna Shelton's father was a minister, they were married by J. W. Pruett. Witnesses were William Alexander Loftin age 22 (Lock's brother-in-law, husband of Laura Rossie Cranford), Adolphus Floyd Shelton age 22 (Lock's brother) and J. F. Mundy.

Nancy Anna Cranford Shelton died 04 Jul 1886 at the age of 27 and war buried in the cemetery of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford, NC. She is mentioned in her father's Will.

Lock married Laura Ann Mundy about 1887. Laura was the daughter of Fletcher Mundy and Mahala Ward. Laura was born 15 Jun 1869 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was about 15 years older than her. Lock and Laura's marriage produced at least eight children.

The 1900 Census shows Lock and Laura living on Oakland Ave. in Gastonia, Gaston County, NC. Lock's age is listed as 45 and Laura's age was 30. Lock's occupation is listed as "Delivery Man" and he was renting his house. Lock's daughters Mamie (age 17) and Eunice Martha Anna (age 14) from his first marriage to Nancy Anna Shelton where still living at home. Five of Lock and Laura's children are also listed on this Census. Daughter Martha "Mettie" was 12, Vada was 9, Janie Reed was 7 and Lattice (Laddie) Reed was 3. Lock and Laura's son James Russell Shelton (born 08 Aug 1899) was incorrectly listed as a daughter and female. Four of Lock's daughters were working at a cotton mill as spoolers and spinners.

The Census shows that Laura had given birth to 8 children but only 7 survived. The children still living at home were Janie (age 17), Lattie/Lattia (age 12), Russell (age 10), Ralph L. (age 6) and Carroll J. (age 4). Lock was working as a Veterinarian Surgeon. The family also had a boarder by the name of William Brierly.

The 1920 Census shows the Shelton family living on East Main Avenue in Gastonia, Gaston County, NC. Lock was 64 and Laura was listed as being 48. Lock was no longer working as a Veterinarian but as a "Watchmen" at "R.R. Cronear". The family had taken in more boarders and Laura was working as a "Land Lady". Their three sons were still living with the family. James was 20 and working as a "Fireman". Ralph was 16 and working as a "Twister" at the cotton mill. Carroll was 14 and still attending school.

Lock was working as a "Watchman" at the Railroad. Son James Russell Shelton was 30 and working as a "Battery man" at a car factory. Son Ralph L. Shelton was 26 and in the Army. Youngest son Carroll Jenkins Shelton had married Alberta Rankin on 09 Dec 1925. The family had 6 new boarders living with them.
