Miles Rankin Witherspoon was the seventh child born to Thomas Wesley Witherspoon and Margaret Rankin.  Miles was born 13 Mar 1817 at the home of his parents in Lincoln/Catawba County, NC.

Miles Rankin's siblings were:

Miles married Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt on 11 Nov 1844.  She was born in 1820.

On 27 Jul 1844, Thomas Witherspoon deeded to Milas Witherspoon, property on the waters of Hagan's Fork, consisting of 88 acres (Deed Book 1, page 442). 

 
 
 
 

Emanuel Aderholdt was the co-signer of this marriage bond, along with Miles.  It appears that this Emanuel Aderholdt may have been Sarah's younger brother, who was himself only 22 at the time.

On 19 Dec 1847, Elam Sherrill deeded to Milus R. Witherspoon, property containing 7 acres (Deed Book 5, page 210).

 
     
 

On 24 Apr 1848, Jacob Setzer deeded to Milas a tract of land containing 32 1/2 acres on Hagan's Fork, "... on Robinson's line ... to a hickory sapling near H. B. Witherspoon's corner ... to a hickory near said Milas Witherspoon's tan yard."  The price was $90.00 (Deed Book 3, page 402).

 
     
     
 
 
 

According to the 1850 Catawba County Census, Miles Rankin and Sarah were living in Catawba County and had 3 children: Margaret, James P. and John H.  They were living nearyby Miles' parents, Thomas and Margaret Witherspoon.

On 07 Mar 1856, H. B. Witherspoon transferred to Milas R. Withersppon, "... for $10.00, land on the waters of Hagan's Fork ... 88 acres ... nothing herein to affect the lifetime interest of Margaret Witherspoon's righ to the land during her natural life."  (Deed Book 4, page 630)

 
 
 
 

In 1860, Miles Rankin and Sarah were living in Catawba Station and had seven children.  His Real Estate value was $250 and his Personal Estate was $360.

On 13 Jun 1877 (Will Book 4, page 170), when her father Jacob Aderholt's Will was registered in Lincoln County, NC, Sally "Sarah" Aderholdt Witherspoon, daughter, was willed 2 beds and bedspreads, one table, one bureau, 2 cows, 1 yearling and a variety of kitchen furniture.

 
 
 
 

The 1870 Agricultural Census tells the size and value of the farm, as well as the livestock on the family farm.

By 1880, Miles Rankin was 63 and Sarah was 61.  There were only two of their children still living at home, Emanuel and Denford, but they had taken in an orphan, who was bound to the family.

Sarah died on 08 Nov 1887.
 
                             

1890 North Carolina Federal Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 fire and only small fragments survived for South Point and River Bend Townships in Gaston County AND Township No. 2 in Cleveland County.

                             

Miles Rankin Witherspoon died 09 Feb 1892.  He and Sarah are buried in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont, NC.
