As early as 1846 David Leander Sherrill was having medical problems and wasn't able to serve in the local militia.

David Leander Sherrill did not serve in the Confederacy during the Civil War. As early as 1846 he apparently was having medical problems and wasn't able to serve in the local militia.
 
 
The 1860 Census shows David and Lovina/Lavinia living in the Elk Shoal area of Alexander County, NC. David was 35 and Lavinia was 25. He was working as a Farmer and his personal estate was worth $218. They had four children: Mary Ann (age 6), Dorcus (age 4), Margaret (age 2) and Wiley Washington (age 10 months).

The 1870 Census shows David and Lavinia Sherrill still living in the Elk Shoal area of Alexander County. David was 44 at the time of the Census and Lavinia was 34. The Census shows the value of his Real Estate as $300 and his Person Estate as $200. David and Lavinia had six children: Mary Ann (age 15), Dorcus (age 13), Wiley Washington (age 10), Julia Isabell (age 7), Eliza Louise (age 5) and William Henry (age 2). Daughter Margaret had died 06 Oct 1861 at the age of three.

The Census shows that David is "Maimed, Crippled or Bedwridden" and working as a farmer. The children living on the family farm were Mary Ann (age 25), Wiley Washington (age 20), Julia Isabell (age 17), Eliza Louise (age 15), William Henry (age 13) and Ranius Monroe (age 9).
