Jacob Setzer I, "the Pioneer", was born in 1730 in Heidelberg, Germany. He settled in Catawba County by 1765 (at that time part of Lincoln County). He is believed to have come to America, along with his brother, Michael, on Captain William Muir's ship Brothers from Rotterdam, Holland. The ship landed in Philadelphia, PA on September 26, 1753. Jacob was the son of Johannes Adam Setzer, who came to America on the Ship Patience which landed in America on August 10, 1750. Michael went west and Jacob came south almost immediately.
The Ship Brothers
Jacob was a Physician and brought his medical books with him when he came to America. He settled on the farm of Conrad Bovey (Poovey) near Newton, North Carolina. Jacob married Mary Magdalene Bovey about 1753. She was the daughter of Conrad and Magdalene Bovey and was born about 1735.
Jacob and Mary lived in a part of Anson County, North Carolina. Rowan County was formed from Anson in 1753 and included all the territory west to the Blue Ridge. The area where they lived eventually became part of Mecklenburg County in 1762, then part of Tryon County, then part of Lincoln County in 1779, and in 1842 part of Catawba County, NC. They lived on Hildebrand Creek, an arm of Clark's Creek, currently located in Catawba County, about 3.5 miles west of Maiden. A deed from 10 Dec 1766 on file in Mecklenburg County shows that Jacob was deeded 196.5 acres of land by Conrad Bovey. Jacob and Mary had three sons:
