Jean Le Pape de Stavelot was born about 1555 in St. Avold, Lorraine, France and is frequently referred to as the "elder".  Jean Le Pape is the French name for the English name John Pope.  Johann Papst/Bapst is the German equivalent.  Jean Le Pape lived in Stavelot, Belgium but eventually emigrated to Annweiler, Germany about 1595.  According to records, he was still alive in 1606.
