Oliver Cromwell Loftin

Born: Feb 1861, Catawba County, NC

Died:  2 Apr 1930, Lincoln County, NC

Oliver Cromwell Loftin was the sixth child born to James Franklin Loftin and Frances "Franky" Elizabeth Fisher.  Crom*, as he was called by family and friends, was born Feb 1861 in Catawba County.

* When I was a little boy, my Dad (Sam Loftin) told me about his Grandfather William Alexander Loftin (who Sam said family and friends called Alec), Washington Lafayette Loftin (who Sam said was called Fate), and Oliver Cromwell Loftin (who Sam said the family called Crom).

Com's siblings were Harriett Jone Loftin, William Alexander Loftin, James Edmund Loftin, Mary Frances Loftin (not to be confused with Mary Frances Loftin, the daughter of William Alexander Loftin), Alonzo Loftin (not to be confused with Alonzo Lester Loftin or Alonzo Kelly Loftin) and Washington Lafayette Loftin.

Crom's father, James Franklin Loftin, was killed-in-action in 1864 during the Civil War.  Crom would have been 3 years old at the time.  According to the 1870 Catawba County Census, Crom (Oliver) was 9 years old and living with his mother and siblings in the Hamilton Township of Catawba Station.

According to the 1880 Catawba County Census, Crom (listed as Oliver C. D.) was 17 years old and still living at home with his 52 year old mother, Frances Elizabeth, and 20 year old brother, Washington Lafayette Loftin.  Crom's occupation was listed as working on the family farm.  His elder brother, Alonzo Lester Loftin, had married Laura Cranford and they lived nearby with their young family.

Crom's wife, Belle, seems to have died between 1900 and 1920.  Oliver Cromwell Loftin married Zettie Rachel McAlister.  When Zettie married Crom, she brought four children with her from a previous marriage.  The 1920 Lincoln County Census shows that Crom's son, Roy, age 24, was still living in the family home.  There were five additional Loftin children.  There is no indication whether they were the children of Crom & Bell or Crom & Zettie.  The four oldest children that were living in the home worked at the cotton mill.  Crom's age was listed as 57 and he was still working as a farmer.
