Hattie's father, James Franklin Loftin, was killed-in-action in 1864 during the Civil War.  Hattie would have been 15 years old at the time.

Hattie married Gilbert A. McKinnis (frequenly spelled McGinnis) who was 9 years her senior.  Hattie & Gil lived at the farm closest to her mother, Elizabeth.  Gil was born about February 1840 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.  He was the sixth child of John & Dorothy "Dolly"  McKinnis.

The 1950 Davie County Census lists Gilbert's age as 10.  The family had apparently done a lot of moving, as seen in the variety of counties where the children were born - Iredell, Lincoln, Ash and Surry.

There are a number of discrepancies in the ages from the 1850 to the 1860 Censuses.  The 1860 Catawba County Census lists Gilbert's age as 18.  The family name is also listed as McGinnis.

The Catawba Soldier,   1911

"Gilbert enlisted in Company E, 32nd Regiment on 05 Sep 1861.  He served as a good soldier until at Spottsylvania Court House, where he was wounded.  Soon after his recovery, he returned to the war where he remained until the close.  On his return home he spent his life farming, at which he was successful.  He is still living, a good quiet citizen."

Hattie's father, James Franklin Loftin, entered the Civil War in May of 1864 and served with the 49th Reg. of NC troops.  He was killed while serving in 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA.

Once he returned from the war, Gilbert was very active in church.  He was a member of the Smyrna Society from at least 1872.  In 1887 Gilbert, along with his brother-in-laws, William Alexander Loftin and Preacher Francis “Fitze” Drum, decided a church was needed in the Catawba County community where they lived, so they called for a meeting at Walden School House.  Many of the people in the community were part of the congregation at Shiloh, a Methodist Episcopal Church, and there was friction dating from the War Between the States.  Response to the meeting was encouraging and a brush arbor was constructed near the site where Center Methodist Church now stands.

According to the 1900 Catawba County Census, Hattie and Gil were living on a farm near her mother.  Gil was 60 and Hattie was 51.  Junius, age 13, and Annie, age 7, were the only two children still living at home.  Hattie's mother, Elizabeth, age 69, was living nearby, all by herself.  Hattie's brother William Alexander & his family were also living nearby.

The 1900 Catawba County Census lists the birth year & month for Gilbert, Harriett, Junius and Annie.  Apparently Junius went by the nickname "June".  The Census also reveals that Gil could read, but not write.

The 1910 Catawba County Census reveals that Gilbert's 16 year old daughter, Anna, was still living with him at home.  Gil & Hattie's youngest son, Junius, and his wife, Lola Gilleland, were leaving nearby and had been married for 3 years.  The next farm was that of Hattie's parents, James Franklin Loftin & Frances Elizabeth Fisher.  Elizabeth's son James and his second wife, Fannie, were living with Elizabeth.  This was James & Fannie's second marriage.
