Charlie
Roosevelt Loftin was born 22 Oct 1905 in Catawba County, NC.
He was the first child born to Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida
Lillian Setzer. Alonzo was a staunch Republican, so when
his son was born, Alonzo decided Charlie had to have "Roosevelt"
as his middle name. Charlie was infant baptized at the
Catawba Methodist Church on 25 Oct 1906. |

Charlie's
father, Alonzo, owned much property in the area of the family
home on Sherrills Ford Rd. and E. Bandys Rd. Alonzo owned and
operated Loftin’s Fish Lakes and the family would have big
“get-togethers” there. During the depression, Alonzo lost the
property to Kannie (Candes) Witherspoon Shufford.
Charlie worked
the field near the ponds and eventually was able to purchase the
lakes and surrounding property on E. Bandy’s Rd. for himself.

Folks came from far-and-wide to fish at the lakes
There was a shack where Charlie sold bait, as well as drinks and
